I could never understand why this guy wasn't a featured player in the Cal offense. Me, in sect. QQ, row 68, screaming how wide open this guy was on a regular basis. The QB, only able to concentrate on the same receiver, play after play. Tedford, contemplating past and future offensive strategy, while ignoring the game in front of him from the sideline. If Antonio Gates were allowed to play a year of college and leave the NFL and come to Cal for one year, any coach would get him the ball all day long. We had that guy, he was here for 3 years, but I feel like we never really got see him.

What exactly happened with him and Dykes? Why the F was he a WR?

Has there ever been a tight end and quarterback with the same last name who went to the same college to play for the same team at the same time?

Kudos to Dykes, Cal, and Rodgers. Despite the bad year, this is a success.

2011 Rogers is a true freshman who did not grasp the playbook well enough to play at full speed and thus got buried on the depth chart behind Miller and Hagan. Going into 2012 coach Tedford was all in with the two TE offense with Rogers and Hagan. 2 weeks before the Nevada game Hagan breaks his hand which forced Rogers to play H-back and Wark to play in Rogers spot. Hagan misses the first two games and in game 2 against Southern Utah Rogers injures his foot and has to miss the Ohio State game - Hagan finally comes back against Ohio State but then sustains a career ending knee injury - Rogers misses several games, but gets healthy for the UCLA game and plays like an All American. Richard is then off and on for the rest of 2012 with injuries, so Tedford never actually had Rogers healthy or playing in his natural TE spot because once Hagan got hurt Rogers had to play H back with Wark as the TE - then last year he plays an inside slot role - so I don't think we ever really saw his talent, but it's certainly not because Tedford failed at something - it was a series of unfortunate injuries that directly or indirectly affected his production. Richard Rogers is a great young man with immense talent, excited to see what he does at the next level. Great day for Cal and for both Coach Dykes and Tedford who helped develop his talents. GO BEARS

Haha that's ok... I'm here to serve it up to all Cal fans, and I'm off YouTube probation now. I uploaded a newscast of the Myth Busters cannonball accident a few years ago, and it went viral... Over a million views in a bit more than 12 hours, then someone got mad and YouTube pulled it and gave me a stern warning :acclaim:

On why he declared early... “A lot of factors go into that – the coaching change, the system was just different from me coming from coach Tedford’s system, obviously a pro-style offense. It was just a lot of things to learn about playing tight end my first two years and my last year playing receiver it was very different and I really like playing tight end and I knew that’s where I was going to be playing at the next level if I got the opportunity so I wanted to move on and continue learning about playing tight end, all the little details of blocking and route running from the tight end position that I didn’t get this past year because of the offensive switch.”

On why he's never watched "The Play" with his Dad, who was a part of it in 1982... "When I'm with him, it’s just weird to me because it’s my dad and I don’t know how people feel about their dad but I could never see my dad play because he’s old now. It’s not a bad old but he’s old. It’s weird to see my dad actually play. The Pac-12 Network had a replay of the whole game so me and my teammates were watching it and looking to see how my dad would play and who we compared him to on our team and things like that. My dad likes to talk a lot about how they were more physical than us back in the day."

Just from the "entertainment" angle, what a masterful pick by the Packers: the R to R meme, the Cal connection, etc. is going to be a hit with the media, fans, etc. It will be good for everyone and every institution!

Coach Dykes who helped develop his talents? If you read his quotes, it sounds like he got drafted in spite of Coach Dykes. He left because of the elimination of the position in the TFS and scouts had to look at film from his sophmore year. Huge congratulations to Rodgers, but I honestly don't see how anyone can give Dykes any praise or credit for this one.

Quote:

When head coach Sonny Dykes took over the Bears' program in 2013, Rodgers II lost weight and played wide receiver in the new scheme.

"I knew the system he was in and I wasn't sure that system was preparing him for the NFL, only because he's a true tight end," Rodgers Sr. explained. "He wanted to move on. He's always been this way. He's a self-starter and he knows what he wants.
