The following are quotes from the 'Class Notes' section of an annual Stanfurd magazine where their alumni are asked to 'update' their classmates about their lives. Each of the following blurbs was written by that person as an update to their classmates and usually edited as a narration by the magazine. Think Facebook in a classified format:

"My wife and I attended the USC game, ugh, but sadly planned a trip to Mexico returning the 2nd of January not, apparently at the time, having faith enough in our Cardin-l. The USC game was a triple bummer with my wife ordering post-game soothing but expensive spa treatments at the Hotel Bel Air and me medicating with $20 martinis at the bar. In a moment that should have been a harbinger, I dropped my smart phone on the way into the stadium, breaking the screen...."

"---- writes that her husband resigned his stressful position as ----- but has stayed busy with a lot of contract jobs, as well as collecting recreational toys to use at their home in the country. He continues to make improvements to the house and land. The landscaping has been so successful that their daughter is planning to get married at the house. Son is looking for a job. His passion is music festivals, but for now he is living with skiing friends iin --- and working with his father on construction jobs. Their other son was on the US Ski Team but is now a member of ---- ski team with four year scholarship. "

"----- recently moved from San Jose to Austin, Texas. His younger son is in kindergarten, and he and his older son climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in August. ---- pilots a 2011 Piper Mirage, so when they get tired of Austin, they fly to their ranch in Durango, without having to deal with security lines."

"Post commune life has me living and loving, biking and hiking, up in ----. How wonderful that she is able to say, "There is no lack of anything whatsoever."

"---- says her degree in international relations "has been put to very good use! In addition to working 12 years in Washington, D.C. in internal agriculture, food marketing, agricultural policy and trade policy, I've spend the past 15 years working in agriculture production, marketing and trade for the ----. With Illinois being a premier agricultural exporting state, foreign markets and our buyers are always in our focus. While here at ----, I spearheaded the development of an annual 'Market Study Tour' program in which our organization takes 10 to 20 farmers to a different overseas market every year in order to educate farmers about the markets.... [ edited for brevity ] .... We are also certified spinning instructors and enjoy fitness, nutrition and other volunteer coaching opportunities."

".....History has taken me to many interesting places over the years: France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Russia and finally Turkey....We do have an excape hatch in the States, a house on Brant Lake in the Adirondack mountains."

"My study abroad experience in ---- was my first experience with tropical forests in the ecosystems and apparently I was hooked. She now travels to the tropics a couple of times per year. Aside from recent bouts of malaria, -- loves being able to both travel abroad and come back to SoCal where she can play beach volleyball and hike."

"...thrilled to be staying at ---- for her ophthalmology residency ("aka examining and operating on lots of eyes)." Last year, --- contributed to a clinical research trial in India...Of her time in India, she writes, "The Taj is an amazing as everyone claims!"

If I have time, I will post more.

You know, as much as we all love to knock Stanford and their pretentious wine-and-cheese crowd, the fact remains that Stanford's magazine and their class notes and alumni association do a good job of keeping alumni involved. Obviously, there's a degree of "look at me and my great life" in any class notes, but just because Cal absolutely sucks at alumni engagement doesn't mean that places like Stanford, Princeton, Dartmouth, Virginia, Notre Dame, Duke, etc., are wrong to cultivate that alumni pride and connectedness.

And are class notes updates all that different than the modern-day phenomenon of people who feel the need to broadcast their lives, experiences, and thoughts via facebook or twitter?

I agree. Having a graduate degree at UCLA, I also say UCLA does 10 times better than we do in this department.
Cal does a poor job at alumni engagement.

more like a weak attempt to slam the Furd because there isn't enough Cal sports success vs. the Cardinal to woof about

More like the lame entitled enthusiasm for the notes, has nothing to do with sports.

it was my point that it has nothing to do with sports so it was on to other woofing/slamming attempts?

I believe the OP wished to point out the culture of narcissism around "developing your personal brand" at the Farm.

You're the one who brought up sports, you should change your handle if you're going
to come here to defend the furds.

Thank you, GB54.

It is true; Cal does an incredibly poor job at engaging their alumni. At least - and I hope - our alumni base has the common sense to not post resumes and/or accomplishments in their updates to classmates. It wreaks of Stanfurd.

You're kidding, right?
I've love to hear success stories from my fellow classmates and alumni. They can be inspirational.

I'd rather hear stories about how fellow alumni are making the world a better place. I couldn't care less about how entilted people are spending their millions. I think that's the point, and that's the difference between cal and the furd. Although there are some great furdies making a difference. Thankfully, we have more of them.

I think context is important - it takes a unique person to advertise their own financial or even career accomplishments. Talking up your ranch and private plane in an update is just sad. I have been at both campuses as a student. That quality is definitely more present at Stanfurd than Berkeley.
