"After nearly five years of maneuvers and machinations that would baffle a law professor, former UCLA star Ed O'Bannon will walk into a federal courtroom Monday as the star witness in a trial that will decide whether the NCAA must pay college athletes for its use of their likenesses in television broadcasts, video games and other consumer "

Well if O'Bannon were to prevail, the NCAA would always have the option of showing game with blank dots covering a player's face and name. Interviews would likewise have to have the faces blanked out and "Unidentified UCLA player" under the name of the interviewee." :p

Of course the NCAA could charge the players if they want their names shown on TV, much as they would charge any company that wanted "product placement" advertisement during the broadcast games. This revenue would offset the payments made to the colleges and universities.

The NCAA's attorney used the Cal Stanford football rivalry to argue that student athletes should not be paid from broadcasts of the games. Not surprisingly the NCAA's lead counsel is a Cal Grad (class of 1980).

The consensus on Twitter from those in the court room is that the NCAA is getting thrashed.
