The estimated cost of this proposed project is $370 million. No state-appropriated funds and no funds from student tuition will be used. In addition to bonds, a significant part of the project will be funded by private fundraising.

Time value of money considerations aside, it is still puzzling how we had to reconstruct our stadium for the mere cost of $321 million and now some schools are spending upwards of a half-billion just for remodeling and upgrades. Even Stanfurd's $90 million "downgrade" seems quite impressive these days.

Until the OKC Thunder came along, the State of Oklahoma had little else to root for except its college football team. UO under Bud Wilkinson during the 1950's truly established its claim to being a leading football power in the NCAA. The Sooners were the only game in town. They've had intermittent success since the 50's, but its Stoops who has brought them back to eminence. So it isn't surprising that football-happy Oklahoma is upgrading its stadium and its less surprising that its privately funded. Oklahoma and Alabama have a lot in common in their overwhelming dedication to college football. Small town America loves football.

Right?

I think what is most interesting here is that I (and others I suppose) have been pulling out the "quarter billion" line for a couple years, when a MASSIVE chunk of it was pure safety.

OU, OTOH, does not sit on a active fault, as far as I know, and has had a few good upgrades already...

Is quarter-half billion the new mark in this sport? That is crazy. I remember when a billion was an insane amount for the Dallas stadium. Now it is normal for that level of sport.

They are probably getting as much enclosed square footage out of this as we got between the 2/3 CMS remodel and the SAHPC. Looking through the old photos of the current stadium, it is basically an erector set with a brick facade.

http://gfoms.com/

Still, they are winning now (as in their facilities are decently modern anyway and they obviously can compete to pull in top recruits)... I'd think it prudent to wait until these labor/antitrust/name and likeness rights issues are settled.

Stanford doesn't have much contained space in their stadium... it is dirt cheap, and a lot is built on dirt, even some bathrooms are located outside the bowl. Might be a smart thing to do with the space they have and cost of building earthquake safe buildings - just make the football stadium an erector set on dirt and build smaller facilities outside the perimeter to house operations and such.

Still I think it looks nice, especially compared a lot of the monstrosities out there. What I like is that they aren't putting ridiculous out of place structures in the endzones (for example what they have there now... or A&M, nebraska, alabama or a lot of others).

I believe A&M is keeping this endzone structure after their $500 million remodel and it's quite hideous.

Or check out this garbage at Nebraska:

Yes, OU is still the biggest game in the state, though not the only one now. And there are about 1/2 of those in that small state that are OSU fans and have no love for the Sooners.

But intermittent success since the '50s? Uh, the late '60s, '70s and '80s prior to Stoops were pretty ok for them too. They had two short stretches of mediocrity in the early 1960s and 1990s. Record of 469-164-10 since 1960, 25 conference titles, 4 national titles, and 38 bowl games. Stoops accounts for 8, 1, 14 of those respectively in his 14 of those 54 years. Stoops has done well, but Switzer and Fairbanks had great records there as well.

I appreciate that, at least so far, unlike most SEC teams they aren't afraid to play other high level teams from the Pac - 12, Big Ten, ACC, etc. and on the road as well. I fear that will soon be a thing of the past the way college football & its scheduling is moving.

Those photos ColoradoBear1 supplied makes it even better that the basic design of CMS was kept intact after its remodel. I've always felt CMS sets the standard for excellent sight lines. That abomination at A&M not only looks like a partially unfolded Transformer, but it appears at least half the fans have either lousy, or even blocked, views. Nebraska's is a little better, though the stadium looks like the construction crew went on strike half way through the job and never returned.

You da' man! I had forgotten the specifics of Switzer and Chuck Fairbanks.
