Any info on him?

No rank listed, offer from Idaho it seems. According to tos, last reported gpa was low 3.

Some reports that he's projected for DE/DL but needs a lot of S&C for weight.

Highlights showing a lot of D work. Seems quick and aggressive.

Not much on the kid. No YouTube videos. Rivals database pretty sketchy. Hudl had an additional video. Like the kid's hands and motor. Appears to have good size at 6'2" and listed at 240#. I wonder if we use him as a TE or DE/OLB?

He's being brought in as a DE.

They've been evaluating him since spring and I thought he'd have an offer earlier. They really like the size and athleticism he brings the position.

Surprised Johnson doesn't have more offers at this stage but as we've seen before, this staff doesn't wait for others to offer guys they like before jumping in.

Slightly OT I guess but I've been wondering for a while about Central High in Fresno having East Campus & West Campus: Do they have 2 football teams, basketball teams, etc., etc. or are all the athletic teams only on the East Campus? I've been confused in the past because sometimes you see recruits listed as attending Central and sometimes Central East but I don't really recall ever seeing Central West. Anybody know?

All I know is I like seeing us getting kids out of the Fresno area. generally speaking, there is a fair mount of talent there annually. Bigelow was our last pull from there in recent years that I recall.

Mahalo.MB, for the clarification. I see that Scout updated his metrics at 6'3.5" and 249#, so the frame can accommodate more weight and strength.

After reading about him, I would rather believe that CAL made the great decision.

Almost simultaneous offer/commit ... great that our recruiters can spot these players and get them early. Building for the future.

Zeandae has size, speed and a Cal-type GPA.
Welcome, Zeandae !!!

dude has been waiting on this a long time...

well, at least he has the measurables? maybe with another year of defensive end, he'll get more polished.

too bad savion is so small, bet he'd love to ball for cal too... but with our ST coverage team being exceptionally awful, having a little speed demon as return specialist may not be a big priority to use a schollie on

One reason for the lack of info. is that Idaho and the region directly surrounding it is not really covered by the recruiting sites so much. This is one reason why Boise St. was underrated for many years and still plays above their recruiting ranking. I am all for us making recruiting inroads into that territory. The players are usually much better than they are ranked.

Uh yeah. He ain't from Idaho

Regardless hopefully this is just the staff in before the rest. He had interest from auburn and USC among others. So it may be an issue of people wanting to see him as a senior at DE

MB, thanks for the background, explaining the mutual interest.
He's been thoroughly vetted by the D coaches.

Whoops
Misread the earlier post that said "offer from Idaho". I thought that was shorthand for "we made an offer to a guy from Idaho".

I still think recruiting in the Idaho region is OK.

In any case, welcome Zeandae.

The population of Idaho is the same as Alameda county and less than 7 other Californian counties. While I'm not opposed to reaching out to out of state recruits who are interested in coming to Cal, we have a finite budget and staff for recruiting so there are probably better recruiting areas with higher yield. Right now the 909 area code seems pretty fruitful.

My point was that I would't assume there isn't any talent there just because they generally aren't rated very well.

I wasn't suggesting that it be a prime target for recruiting. And I was talking about the broader area including parts of Washington, Oregon, Wyoming etc.

My thought was that some of the coaching staff may know of some specific areas that could prove as targets in that general region. In such a scenario it might prove cost effective.

BTW thanks for pointing out that Cal has a limited budget. I thought they had endless amounts of money to spend on recruiting.

I agree. The Fresno/Clovis area is very much dialed in to youth and high school sports and it has been my impression that they produce many very good athletes with a strong work ethic.
