I pay here too

I suppose you are in a complete state of zen over the QB recruiting?

how exactly did Cal approach Bowers? they evaluated him at multiple camps, and then TF decided he was worthy of an offer after this weekend's camp after a supposedly great performance. that sounds fair given his mediocre jr. season.

how is that big-timing? bc Cal can assume they are able to land a guy whose only other offer is Colorado State? i don't believe Cal needs to recruit a guy like Bowers the same way they would need to recruit a guy like Browning, and the staff probably doesn't either.

SD: "Cal recruits itself". it's Colorado State, ffs.

I'm not sure why I even have to explain this again.

If Cal approached recruits with MWC offers with the attitude that you've expressed (basically that it's a joke to have to compete with CSU), it would be a big mistake.

They're not doing that and that's the point I was making. They're not taking anything for granted, nor can they afford to.

i actually pay that site for information i wouldn't get here, in advance or otherwise. this board just happens to have more active members and conversations.

i never said that they should offer Bowers and speak to him like "you should be so lucky to come to Cal".

i said Cal should feel VERY CONFIDENT in landing him over a school like CSU. but i never said they should treat Bowers like a stepchild.

Shoot Ed given the way the QB recruiting has gone this year if they really truly believe Bowers is worthy of the scholly they gotta be treating w kid gloves doesn't matter who the competition is

be easy ed. im not sure it pays, for yourself mostly to get yourself wound up about Dykes so much. They havent been very good and its affected what they can do in recruiting. Either they win games, probably 4-6, or we'll get a chance to start anew because the new AD will likely want to bring in his or her own people since we're getting poor results with our current staff.

i actually think this staff is made up of a few really good recruiters. just don't know that they can win, but point taken.

CSU's been on him a long time and Cal just offered. CSU's a bowl team and a program he has a strong relationship with so I'm sure Cal's not lol'ing their chances coming off 1-11.

And yes, if he waited a few weeks for the Elite 11, he could well see his options open significantly so painting this as some desperate decision he should make isn't exactly fair to Bowers.

The comments made against Bowers isn't about being fair.
The comments are about how anything and everything the Cal coaching staff does is inadequate, to put the best face on it, including thinly-disguised negative comments about Hinder and the ever-present "love" for Kline.

Browning from Folsom to uDuh
Bowers is from Bothell, an easy bikeride to uDuh.
Area-wise, a switch.
I hope we get Bowers even though his acceptance thread will provide a ripe opportunity for certain Bear "fans" to relaunch their well-practiced and rehearsed tirades against our coaches.

It feels like an over reliance on Ingram (apparently the best on the staff) is developing and personally, while it's good to have an "ace", I'd like to see it a bit more evenly distributed vis a vis results. Peeler, whatever his actual title/role, appears to be promising, but he works over an area that's inherently tough to pull kids out of. Yenser I hope breaks through this year, but it sounds like a lot of the OL is still Ingram.

the only comment about Hinder and Kline was in reference to posters like you who have called categorically called Elite 11 prospects busts.

So why do some of you Dyke's doubters even care about recruiting?

If your dreams are realized and Dykes is shown the door, a good percentage of these recruits may either choose another school, transfer after they are already here, or be poorly suited for a different offensive/defensive system.

There is an interesting hypocrisy in welcoming a player who is presumably recruited into a system you loath.

Impressive BI research, kid, but I talked about specific names that didn't perform to anywhere near their expectations ... not about Elite 11s in general and Maynard was not an Elite 11.

And, as stated, Elite 11s are impressive ... in high school.
After that ....

Hinder is, at present, competing with Boehm for backup QB.

? no matter who is leading the team, you always want to recruit the best players possible. and any coach tweaks his gameplan to his players' strengths...

and i don't think anyone prefers Dykes to get fired this year, rather than to win 7+ games and turn things around.

No. of course not...but it's not like things will change until this season ends. I would rather be hopeful than plan for the next coach.
Plus, its a bit annoying seeing people (not necessarily you guys...but you know who I mean) reading the free board here, which actually has some traffic compared to the other sites, and then telling everyone what a bunch of dolts are here posting on Growls.

So what is the source of your confidence? After all, a 3.0 GPA is the new 3.7 these days under Dykes and I'm sure there are schools (cough....like CSU) where non-Cal material can go and be successful.

LOL. obviously not! It's the interwebz!

Vis a Vis Bowers....the hang up is that sure, he's looked good in the camps...the no contact camps. His TD/Pic ratio is NOT very good. Obviously multi factorial, but personally I would like to have seen that improve during his senior year, BUT elsewhere it was pointed out that something like 75% of the top QB prospects have already committed this year, so if the staff really wants one this year, they probably have to jump and clearly we've already whiffed on a whole bunch of QBs already so...

recruit the best players possible = stars
coach tweaks his gameplan to his players' strengths = as Teddy did for Ayoob, and making Longshore play with a broken ankle so that he had to throw off his back foot
7+ wins = :woohoo

so you're saying we DON'T want to recruit the best players possible? who said anything about recruiting for stars?

so you're saying good coaches DON'T play to their players' strengths? who said anything about Ayoob, Longshore, or JT?

They now need to get to a bowl game as even a Gilby type 4-5 win season is not worth the cash we are paying out.

Burns isnt a good hire if they had a chance to hire Akina especially since he went to stanford and upgraded their defensive staff which sort of shows that a move to the bay area was probably doable, but hes better than Stewart. Keeping Yenser is questionable, he had virtually no experience to begin with. If the o-line struggles again this year, i think its certainly a legitimate question to bring up as to why Dykes didnt can yenser after such a terrible season last year on the o-line. clearly the weak link on offense and honestly a firable offense if its what ends up holding the team back from getting at least a few wins.
