This reeks of someone grandstanding on an issue to gain publicity.

While I agree that it needs to improve (which it is) it's laughable that state employees are all of a sudden worried abour athlete grad rates. How about focus on funding the system so they don't have to rely on private money while still calling themselves public schools..

Agree. But it is priceless to hear Newsom describe something as a disgrace, given his personal history.

What Newsom is calling for is completely reasonable. Cal's performance in the classroom has been disgraceful -- an embarrassment to the whole Berkeley community. College athletics departments won't reform themselves, and it is absolutely the appropriate province of the UC and CSU governing boards. Go Bears.

We should not be at the bottom of the fucking NCAA in APR, no matter the finances.

Don't confuse APR with improving grad rates. Not close to the same thing. We won't know for a long time whether there has been actual improvement where it counts.
Newsome may be grandstanding, but we deserve the criticism. Rather than focus on getting upset by the criticism, we should clean up our house. I agree with you on the funding, but specific to Newsome, he has never had any control on UC funding, and I also agree with the poster below-the funding has nothing to do with our failings

Seriously. Don't wish too hard! Next thing that happens is that Cal academics gets watered down to get higher APRs and Grad rates. Personally I am sorta proud of our academics. No compromise. We won't have any Cal Athlete be illiterate and graduate from Cal. If you want a course in raising APRs and Grad rates contact the SEC and UNC.

Gavin Newsom is a son of a bitch but I see our APR trouble as worse than any political failure of his. A politician with no personal indiscretions is a unicorn.

The scarier part of this is that he is proposing that he have some sort of say in the AD hiring and how they are managed, if you read his actual letter. Why anyone here would be "yeah newsome!" is insane. This isn't just him saying "hey guys, do better, you're Cal"... He's not just calling us out (which would be fine in itself), he's saying he deserves a voice in how our AD is run. No.

I'm not asking for a unicorn, I understand many have personal indiscretions - but sleeping with your best friend's wife is one indiscretion that goes a bit too far over the line for me.
