This reeks of someone grandstanding on an issue to gain publicity.

While I agree that it needs to improve (which it is) it's laughable that state employees are all of a sudden worried abour athlete grad rates. How about focus on funding the system so they don't have to rely on private money while still calling themselves public schools..

Kind of ironic that as they are pulling state funding from the schools, they are trying to influence athletic department policies. But I agree that it reeks of someone grandstanding to gain publicity.

We should not be at the bottom of the fucking NCAA in APR, no matter the finances.

Agree. But it is priceless to hear Newsom describe something as a disgrace, given his personal history.

Gavin Newsom is a son of a bitch but I see our APR trouble as worse than any political failure of his. A politician with no personal indiscretions is a unicorn.

Don't confuse APR with improving grad rates. Not close to the same thing. We won't know for a long time whether there has been actual improvement where it counts.

Newsome may be grandstanding, but we deserve the criticism. Rather than focus on getting upset by the criticism, we should clean up our house. I agree with you on the funding, but specific to Newsome, he has never had any control on UC funding, and I also agree with the poster below-the funding has nothing to do with our failings

What Newsom is calling for is completely reasonable. Cal's performance in the classroom has been disgraceful -- an embarrassment to the whole Berkeley community. College athletics departments won't reform themselves, and it is absolutely the appropriate province of the UC and CSU governing boards. Go Bears.

no the truth does not hurt but when you making progress doing what you can to fix .. signs of things getting better .. but no he to pull this .. was there a need for CA politician to call out the flag ship university

how about stop talking and making news bits for other schools to recruit against us and pick up the phone and have meeting with chancellor and AD interim and sonny .. the public embarrassment has happened already he is very late and and from were im from we would call a trick ... just a hater move 100%

what is doing to fix the problem ? this write up ?

I am not blaming funding for our academics, I'm saying high ranking state employees should focus on the shameful disinvestment of the greatest university system on the planet, rather than such a micro issue.

The truth hurts and I have no problem with what Newsome said. Agreed that we are doing better and we should continue to shine a light on how poorly some of our student athletes performed during Barbour's watch.

Agree, Gavin Newsom is a ****ing joke. This is a publicity stunt that is being used as a way to get his name out there before he announces that he's running for governor.

Seriously. Don't wish too hard! Next thing that happens is that Cal academics gets watered down to get higher APRs and Grad rates. Personally I am sorta proud of our academics. No compromise. We won't have any Cal Athlete be illiterate and graduate from Cal. If you want a course in raising APRs and Grad rates contact the SEC and UNC.

This is a factor in our grad rates. We are never going to get 100% graduation like a private school because we actually make you learn something to earn a degree and prepare you for life after sports. This is a huge positive and should be a major recruiting tool to hard working kids from solid families that value education and their children's future.

But, Newsome is right. We must have higher standards and do better on and off the field, it's the responsibility of an AD to see that we are elite in everything we do at the #1 University in the world. Our football and basketball programs must lead the way. Hiring a great AD is part of the turn around. Pressure from him to hire the best is a good thing.

Newsome is currently married to a stanford and he is not leading in any way to restore adequate public school funding to higher education. Why not Gavin? Come to football games, lead there on the most important political issue there is to all public schools, state investment. If he championed that charge as well his words would be much more impactful and his political motives in less question.

He's led on important tough issues before. I hope he will expand his message and go for it all to increase state investment in higher education or does his furd wife have him by the balls?

The scarier part of this is that he is proposing that he have some sort of say in the AD hiring and how they are managed, if you read his actual letter. Why anyone here would be "yeah newsome!" is insane. This isn't just him saying "hey guys, do better, you're Cal"... He's not just calling us out (which would be fine in itself), he's saying he deserves a voice in how our AD is run. No.

I'm not asking for a unicorn, I understand many have personal indiscretions - but sleeping with your best friend's wife is one indiscretion that goes a bit too far over the line for me.

I have a proposition to Gavin on this - If grad rates in any UC/CSU sport are deemed unacceptable (what is that line? 70%? 80%), the state funding for that sport can be dropped to zero along with the state funding used for the AD's salary.

As far as I am concerned no State politician has the right to have oversight or complain until the State decides to fund these schools. Especially some grandstanding politician wh is doing this for own benefit.

Alums, faculty, students, parents want to complain, that works for me. As far as a guy like Newsome goes, he can shove it up his own rear, as soon as he withdraws it from his best friend's wife.

Read the article and his letter more carefully What Newsom is calling for is the right to have a voice in the pick for ADs for schools. He has no background in this area, and can only delay or screw-up the process for his own personal gain. If he said the board or regents or the board overseeing the state colleges should look at the issues, that would be fine by me, but he wants is own personal review. F@ck him and his personal ambitions. Use somebody else.
socaliganbear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If you think he's just calling us out, you're not reading this carefully enough. The Lieutenant Governor wants a say in how we run the AD. Shocking that people here would want more bureaucracy and more government meddling. That's a great way to land a solid hire, "Oh btw you also answer directly to the Lieutenant Governor of California".

That we should be doing better is independent of his political pet platforms.

I think you misunderstood the intent of his letter. Do I get oversight over who Newsom put-on various state boards because the State is doing such a lousy job in so many areas?
