Hell, I'll give you 5 consecutive rosebowl wins. And I'll give you 5 consecutive years of sweeping Furd, SC, and another Pac12 team of your choice for 5 years too. Deal or no deal?

Absolutely deal. That's what insurance is for.

My answer is "yes," but as I type this, I realize that Cal football is inordinately and irrationally high on my list of things I value.

No, but only because I don't wan to upset the kids. Ask me when they are grown.

Yes. As long as my insurance covers the rebuild and no one gets hurt. New house? Rose Bowl wins? Win win situation!

Unless the other team's QB is staying at one of your houses the night before the rose bowl, I'm not sure how burning your house down will lead to a victory for us.

Would you guys trade a rosebowl victory for the burrito never having been invented? How about trading a rosebowl victory in exchange for never being able to see the color blue again? The problem with questions like this is there is no decision to make. The questions you can ask that make sense are "would you trade your car for tickets to the rose bowl if Cal were in it" because that sort of thing can actually happen. I recall Boston fans actually did trade cars for world series tickets, so it's not just hypothetical either.

EDIT: apologies for being a buzzkill. I would trade all your houses burning down for a rose bowl win.

Only if my wife and kids are NOT in the house at the time of the fire, and i can get all my Cal memorabilia out.

I can easily buy another house but I can't easily buy a Rose Bowl win, so the obvious answer is yes. In fact, I'd trade 2 of my homes burning down for a National Championship!

If you said 'yes' and weren't joking, talk to someone whose house actually did burn down.

No deal. It makes no sense to speculate on 5 bowls / 5 season rivalry wins so some sicko pyromaniac can get hot rocks watching my house burn down. Keating is dead. Is it Milken?

Would you trade for a Cal Rose Bowl knowing that you could never attend, see, or hear any part of the Rose Bowl victory? You can only read about the victory on twitter.

As long as you don't come over and burn my house down. That's arson, and the insurance company won't pay off. It has to look like an accident. And I guess if Cal won a Rose Bowl these days, that would be an accident.

Not only can happen, will happen. Cal will be in the Rose Bowl and there will literally be 100,000 people desperate for tickets to what may be a "Once in a lifetime event". How much will a ticket cost? Probably more than I can part with. I will be in Pasadena standing on that golf course, watching on my phone.

Interesting that you pose this question to the Cal fan community. Ironically, Cal was fighting tooth and nail for a win over UW and possible trip to Pasadena when the '91 Oakland Hills firestorm originally ignited, and subsequently burned over 3,000 homes. Many Cal fans and alumni lost everything. I'm sure we have several on this board who went through it. They'd be the best to ask. I know many people who lost their homes in the fire and I'd guess they'd DEFINITELY NOT take that deal. Lives were changed forever on October 20. Many happy families were torn apart after the fact. 25 people died, don't forget (even thought I realize giving up one's life isn't part of your inquiry).

I know a Furd grad who lost his house, the original remaining property through litigation, then his wife, then his career (however, the latter maybe not related) after the fire. The fire was the least of his problems. He's savored that Rose Bowl victory we all desire. I'll ask him the corollary question: would he give up the three Rose Bowls (including 1 win) to avoid ever experiencing the '91 firestorm, and thus getting his house and marriage back. I'm guessing he would.

I'll get back to y'all on Thursday with an answer.

What kind of a masochistic question is this?

Why don't you ask the 'furddies if they would trade burning down their homes for a Rose Bowl win? Or 5 consecutive Rose Bowl wins?

I'm waiting for my cats to die so I can redo most of my house due to ...cat issues. Damn skippy I'd trade my house burning down for a Rose Bowl win. I'd get the RB win and it'd save me from the demo I'm going to have to do. We've got lots to do. Our cats have lived here a long time.

+1... Inane OP. Maybe they should sweeten the pot. I mean, some of guys/gals have more than 2 kids. Why so many? Why not trade in one of them for a Rosebowl....AFTER ALL, you can always make more kids and it is much easier than rebuilding a house....right?...:crazy

I apologize to those who were offended or annoyed from this exercise(childish as it may be). Just a warning, I've posted many similarly inane queries and looking at my post count, it won't be my last. So if this kind of hypothetical nonsense irks you, for your blood pressure's sake, just skip my posts.

That being said, this is one of those question with a "in the grand scheme"theme in mind. Obviously for health, family, and friends, a RB swap is offensively ridiculous. But after reading about Mack Brown's house burning down, this follow up question just popped into my head. He got the 2004 Rosebowl. But his house burned down. One had nothing to do with another, but from a karmic balance sheet point of view, is it wash?

Assuming the family is not at home when the fire occurs. Fully covered for replacement value, construction cost, and already have an idea regarding how I want it rebuilt after the Rosebowl win.

Brings back memories. Remember Oct 20/21 1991. Was on a trip with a number of people doing the leaves in the Northeast. Snuck back to the hotel to catch the critical game. Flew home the next day not knowing about the fire, but seeing the smoke flying in to SFO. What a horror. Come to think of it, the fire and the game both dashed many dreams. Bad weekend, so I guess I have to vote against burning the house down even though stats are eating up my possible chances for Pasadena.

As, Burritos, I've missed these hypothetical Rose Bowl threads.

It's amazing what a first-game win can do to the attitude of this board.

Only if the wife and I and Trouble (the cat) are safe then heck yes, provided I have at least 2 hours to get the important stuff out; the 1949 post Rose Bowl program of NU stealing one from Cal, some paperwork, art and the safe... okay we're good.

Some people are upset at the question and I understand completely. In our situation it is not a huge deal, the kids are gone, we've downsized to be economical and have much more freedom. So, other than retaining a few personal possessions, it's not as big a deal with us. Had you asked me when we lived in Alameda, the answer would be very different.

Mack Brown's home just burned down. I think it's safe to say that this is the deal he made with the devil when his team went to the Rose Bowl over ours in 2004.

No not yet a wash, but a step in the right direction. I would have no problem with your house burning down, assuming every one got out safely, but as much as I would like a rose bowl win, don't mess with my house <grin>
