Should We Start Selling Booze At CMS?

Obviously this question applies to the non ESP sections. Just read that Wake will start selling beer & wine, joining 30 other FBS programs. Thoughts? We could make some serious (and needed) cash...

Honestly don't get why we don't already. Do people honestly think students don't sneak it in anyway?

Well, there are more schools that don't sell booze than there are ones that do, so it's definitely a larger cultural sentiment.

Methinks that's not limited to students. I see lots of old blues with flasks.

BTW, alcohol is available in the ESP clubs, right?

Otherwise I don't see alcohol being served to students. Today's helicopter parents would sue UC. OTOH, maybe with the forthcoming (yeah right) Eastern stadium upgrades, maybe they could add a puke trench to the student section and have all that puke roll down CMS into a ginormus compose bin.

once again, thought this was a PAC12 rule/decision...

I'm all for it though. maybe limit it to 3 quarters or something.

don't really see a downside. appease parents by doing 1st 3Q only and none on the east side of stadium (but endzones and west side should be stocked, heh). it would help bills, might help my 3rd quarter hangovers, and society will move on.

Yes. The fans want it, the school could use the money, what's the harm other than possibly pissing off BYU when they come play?

I think its a P12 rule. IIRC SUC at the Coliseum was the last to stop selling alcohol at games. As a long time niner season ticket holder (no longer though since they wanted $80k PSL for my seats), I saw fights and bad behavior due to alcohol at just about every game I went to. I don't know the stats on the Candlestick drunk tank but based on the number of people I saw being taken away by SFPD I would say it was probably pretty full every game.

Yeah, though we only need a 75% conference vote to have this not be the case. With how money hungry everyone is, I wouldn't be too shocked if it did happen. Especially with the incoming extra costs do to NCAA rule changes. Want to feed your SA's 24/7 at no additional cost? Sell tons of booze and get some beer sponsors.

Why not? Students have access to it. Why not give the paying and age appropriate fans access to a frosty cold one on a hot Saturday afternoon at Memorial? If you pour it, they will come.:p

I remember, back in the day, by the time a young man or woman was off to college, what parents thought was no longer even part of the conversation.

Ah, the good ol' days...

Yes, and maybe the Greeks will leave the fraternity parties and get to CMS before the second quarter starts. Nah, probably not.

I for one am against it. I believe that anything that increases the consumption of alcohol in an emotional environment (like a football game with loyal fan bases) will end up with increased incidences of damage, mayhem and injury.

There is unlimited alcohol in the club sections until the end of the 3rd quarter. It is frankly a "pain in the tush" for those of us who care to watch the game. The drinkers are in and out, in and out, and not necessarily at time-outs, etc. Could be during an offensive drive. But once an alcohol policy begins, it would be difficult to change if behavior was out of order. Hard to police. Yes, there are flasks all around the stadium. A few years ago we had some jerks in front of us who really hit the bottle. There is no security in sight at Cal--yes you could leave your seat and find them--but you get the picture.

Another post mentioned behavior at 49er games at the Stick. As the old stick aged, so did the season ticket holders. Seats were sold on StubHub to a secondary market that was different from early crowds. Drunk from drinking hours in the parking lot, there were fights, bad language, sick fans. Little security at the stick until the parking lot incident and police involvement. Then the security ratcheted up. Crowds at AT&T are much different. Lots of alcohol sold but it is a family oriented stadium and fans seem to act accordingly. And, if someone gets out of line, either from alcohol or bad language, one text message to security, one warning, and out you go.

Given the prices at AT&T and Levi's, I wouldn't be surprised if the 9rs experience is also different going forward.

I have to agree. I certainly have no aversion to an adult beverage or two, but you see in the Clubs that some people just can't handle it. Have had a few folks sit near us who seem to be under the impression that "free" means "consume as much as humanly possible." I have no problem with people being excited and into the game, but I can live without the bad language in front of the kids and I certainly can live without the up and down, up and down. Luckily we're in the middle of the row, but if you're on the aisle this would make you crazy.

Not a Niner fan but I recall when the Giants played at the Stick, they had walking beer vendors in the Left Field bleachers regularly and that created lots of fun. It actually got violent out there...but the drunkenness probably kept the injuries down. Had a GF whose brothers were the types who got arrested at the Stick a couple of times. Talking Dodgers Giants was always fun. I always thought they wanted to mug me.

We already do in essence by providing booze in the various clubs. Now there is a potential conflict because donors are paying for the right to get free booze, but if you sell over-priced beer, like what used to happen in Pac stadiums, I don't think the folks drinking label booze in the clubs will care. And if the folks in the cubs can't handle the booze, make the team better so they want to watch the game instead.

The real problem, in my mind, is there are much steeper insurance and liability issues that colleges don't want to deal with. I mean, for example, our former AD stopped a successful fundraiser event held by alums of a certain sport (male and female teams) because there was booze being served. There been no problems - we were talking about country club types of alums. Totally absurd. But there has been a strong overreaction by colleges and at the conference level, under Hanson, booze was shut-off at Pac stadiums over fear of lawsuits. There are people more sophisticated in this area who can speak to the issue, but I don't see general sales of booze, even if just watered down over-priced beer, unless someone (1) can deal with the liability issue and (2) deal with negative press (look for NPR's of the world to do a slew of stories about events involving intoxicated students of fans that ended in tragedies).

But there are also donors in the Field Club who are paying a fair amount for the right to buy alcohol...that would be more of a conflict.

I'm perfectly fine with alcohol not being available in the rest of the stadium. I've always thought the right to buy a beer for $10 was a dubious privilege at best.

Edit: I should add that I no longer have ESP seats...and I'm fine with not being able to buy beer in the stadium.

That's a good point. This certainly was one of the main pitches for the Field Club seats. Really all academic anyway - as others have noted the Pac 12 forbids this except in the cases of "suites" and "clubs" (e.g. ESP).

Didn't realize that. Its free booze in the other ESP. How much beer do they sell for those prices?

The bars in the Field Club do a pretty lively business (especially last year!). I exaggerated a bit...I think the beers were $8 last year (maybe $9).

+1. Or give adult ticket holders two vouchers per game that allows the ticket holder to buy two beers. It's ridiculously profitable and when managed well is not a problem.

Have some friends who in large part justified their ESP seats because it allowed them to self medicate during our games. At this point I doubt that they'd leave ESP but it may have been a critical selling point for others as well.

I'd like to see beer sales come back to CMS, not just for the club sections.

In the meantime, would people buy a cold non-alcoholic beer if it were offered?

Except the movement is going the other way in the last couple years. And it's not as though Cal is a dry campus - alcohol is sold at the Faculty Club, Cal baseball games, and until recently at the Bear's Lair.
