I agree with the author in that there are moral complexities associated with being a fan of such an intrinsically violent sport, but it does provide inspiration and examples of individuals from diverse backgrounds working together and overcoming adversity.

immoral ... lots of room for discussion
illegal ... not in and of itself but it does attract thugs to certain teams
fattening ... yeah, sitting around eating and drinking, definitely can be fattening.

Author apparently also has "moral problems" with eating meat. I have a moral problem supporting sanctimonious moralists, because they're insufferable d'bags who make the world a much less enjoyable place to live while not really offering anything of value. So guess whose book I WON'T be reading?

If it was immoral God wouldn't reward those who pray to Him with touchdowns

Living causes death and dementia and memory loss and yet it is not immoral to cheer for life...to watch and study life.
Case closed. You're welcome.

Who or what defines what is moral vs. immoral? Is it based on consensus?

The question should be, "does absolute truth exist"? If so, then is football immoral? Otherwise, whatever.

Ironic that your stance so clearly mirrors the very behavior you accuse the author of having with the exception of your apparent lack of introspection.

It was immoral last year.

This year, okay so far.

I do not know if watching Football is immoral. Nor do I know if watching women's / girls soccer is immoral, since the incidence of concussion is higher than in football. Nor do I know if watching a motor race or a boxing match or a ultra-marathon is immoral, but all of those have much higher death rates than football. Not do I know if allowing my son to drive at age 16 is immoral because the #1 cause of death for kids is behind the wheel.

Let's make everything that is not perfectly safe immoral, and lets eliminate all freedom from the world, and just allow the ones in charge to tell us what we can and can not do. What a ridiculous notion.

I wonder if the brain trust from all of these studies understands that the average NFL veteran lives longer than the average american, and generally is more active and healthier than most at older ages. And they certainly live significantly longer than the average individual from the socioeconomic back ground of the average player. So I guess the question should be, is not supporting football immoral?

Right. Sanctimonious egomaniac has personal "awakening," then expects everyone else to go along with his new personal enlightenment... because he's arrogant and egotistical that way... but calling out the d'bag and his sanctimonious BS requires his level of self-indulgent, hypocritical and public "introspection," especially on a football message board. Got it.

Actually... NO. I do my introspection privately, because unlike that arrogant d'bag, I KNOW the world doesn't revolve around me and nobody give a rip about my "journey" except me. And I don't expect the world to fall in line with whatever "moral truth" I discover on that path. The fact this guy thinks his spiritual path is worth anything to anyone else, or that his moral epiphanies are better than anyone else's, speaks more to his hyperinflated sense of self than anything of real value that he's offering to the world. I'll save my introspection for my diary, thanks.

You can come to my BI cookout where we'll eat three pounds of meat each, drink copious amounts of liquor and view immoral sports all the while reclining.
