I wouldn't be surprised to see Franklin roll out a few plays with a 2 QB set. Jared, Luke and one of the running backs or fullbacks would be in the backfield. This has been tried before:

I have seen this done in high school with both quarterbacks standing about 4 feet apart. The defense doesn't know where the ball will be hiked and the QB who doesn't get the snap fakes like he has the ball.

I don't think that we will see this until Pac 12 play begins, if ever, and I predict that it will only be used sparingly. The tactic would be pretty certain to confuse defenses and that alone may a good reason to throw it against the wall and see what sticks. At the very least, future teams would have to prepare for the 2 QB set.

This weekend I expect a more traditional approach to the 2 QB situation. There's just no reason to try an surprise Sac St like we did to NU. Rather than bring Rubenzer in on certain plays, I think Goff will start the entirety of the first part of the game. I do expect Rubenzer to get control of an entire drive of his own, depending on the score late.

Doesn't make sense to me. The whole reason running RBZ worked was because we had numbers. Having 2 QBs is the same as having 1 QB and 1 RB and everyone will tell you that Luke is not really our best RB, he's just our best option when we can overwhelm at the point of attack by using our RB as a lead blocker. Unless Goff is going to block for Luke, this would go against our advantage.

I'm basing this in large part on the amazing work that berk18 has done to explain all this stuff to us.

Cal football is a bit beyond high school football.

I said we won't see this, if at all, until the Pac 12 season starts. It would be a waste to use this on Sac State.

Against NU, Rubenzer was in the backfield with a running back. In the 2 QB set there are three people in the backfield--2 QBs and a running back. The RB can be a big back/fullback like Gingold. Did you even look at the film clip? The second QB is not a blocker. He either receives the ball on a flea flicker or goes out as a receiver. This isn't the sort of set that you would run all the time. It is a gimmick that you use when you want to shock the ether team and get a key first down or a touchdown. Once you use it then every team will see the film and they will have to spend practice time to defend it. Anyway, you critics don't have to approve of the idea. I just have a premonition that TF will try this a couple of times--i.e. having JG and LR on the field at the same time, but not before the UA game. If it works they will use it more often.

Wouldn't you want to try it a few times in the Sac St. game, work the kinks out?

Then run it once in the Az, game and the rest of the season, other teams would have to prep for it, whether Cal uses it or not.

Except for last season.
