This is not something that suddenly develops. I have to wonder whether this explains his turn of fortunes. People have been saying that 2007 was the end, but we won 9 games in 2008 and 8 in 2009 while we struggled at QB. Even in 2010 we were heading toward a tenth straight winning season until Riley went down. (not a good season but still a winning one). And the commentary by some that he chucked academics doesn't square with the fact that he took over a program that was in the academic outhouse and built it to clearly the second best academic program in the conference with over 60% grad rates. It never made sense that the academics took a 180. This was a guy who was an energetic leader when he took over the program and difference between the end and the beginning was night and day. Maybe the guy just no longer had the energy and stamina required to succeed as a D-1 coach at Cal.
I hope for the best for him. And if health keeps him from coaching again, he can be proud of what he did here.
I think there was simply too much happening at the same time around '07 for anyone to handle. Up to the decline Tedford ran a tight ship and a clean program...AND had a winning program on the verge and produced major talent. He also had a major facilities build out that he was involved with, 2 years a nomad, recruited strong (we're still benefiting) and an unhealthy workaholic lifestyle...and this isn't counting the delays and tree sitters. The guy slept in his office and that's just not good. There's now medical research suggesting diet isn't the main cause of heart disease and weight gain but instead bad sleep patterns.
Hope Tedford pulls out of this and gets his health back. He did a tremendous job. Tedford's winning got us the facilities. If anyone thought Cal would get great facilities before Teddy, they'd be lying. It could have never happened without him.
