Are you referring to this? http://www.tmz.com/2014/09/24/fsu-jameis-winston-rape-accuser-extortion-7-million/

The linked article involves an allegation that there was a extortionist demand for a $7M settlement, not that there was such a settlement...

isn't it illegal to publicize a settlement offer. an extortion demand is one thing, but wouldn't winston's lawyer have to prove it was a demand? if it wasn't, he may be in even deeper hot water now.

Maybe at Florida State they do.

Why did Jameis (or his/FSU lawyers, etc.) decide to wait until now to release this? Strange timing considering how it would have been more useful for him back when the controversy first erupted. I'm sure we'll find out more soon.

Not illegal. A settlement offer is inadmissible in court as evidence to prove liability of the other party, but publicizing a settlement offer is not illegal. Whether the demand was extortion is complicated. Generally it depends whether the party making the demand threatens to damage the recipient's reputation, privacy, person, or property or threatens criminal or disciplinary proceedings. It is an area that attorneys sometimes cross the line, thinking that they are protected by the demand being inadmissible, or privileged as an action in litigation. The Irish dancer Michael Flatley successfully sued attorneys who had sent him a settlement demand letter contending that he had raped their client and suggesting that the publicity the lawsuit would harm him.

Completely false. Apparently it was Jameis lawyers who approached the victim for a settlement. Hush money.
