Very happy that we won a Pac-12 game. A win is a win is a win! After being depressed as hell after last week's disaster, Cal fans can smile a little now.

But, we just gave up 105 points to two lower half Pac-12 teams. We need to do something about that defense.

Any quality DB or DL recruits out there: Here is your chance for immediate playing time. Lots of playing time.

To quote Joe Kapp after we lost to WSU in early 80's:

"We just got ran over by a moped and some trucks are coming!"

Go Bears, Beat the Cougars!

The thing we need to remember is, last year our defense was even more pathetic... and then we had a mass exodus of the players that were to return (well, maybe not a MASS exodus, but multiple players left "for the NFL" or for whatever other reasons)... then some of our commits on defense flipped to other teams, then, at least two didn't make it in, academically. We knew this was going to be something of a patchwork defense. I mean, look at the line: three pretty good players, then... semi-sturdy Golden Bears trying their best.

I think Kaufman has them playing competently, all things considered.

Now, can we mount a damn passrush?!?

Are you kidding? Kaufman refuses to pressure the QB. Until that changes we are going to be picked apart. It is more about the scheme than the talent and our future opponents will bear this out. We cannot defend the passing game and I do not see anything coach wise changing our game plan. Wish I was wrong.

Were we watching the same game? Kaufman sent plenty of blitzes in the second half. It's just a lot of the time it didn't get there and it left our DBs exposed (another unit where we are dealing with a deficit of talent and depth).

To be fair, Kaufman is probably about 56 and even if he was on the field instead of up in the booth, I don't think he would be much of a threat against even a high school offensive line.

Most of these negas watch the games by peeking through their navels.
Our DBs are, indeed, young and inexperienced and we've just faced two teams with decent pass-blocking OLs with more than decent QBs and big, solid receivers. Not having McClure and White available doesn't help.
What really bothers the negas today is this:

You forgot to add that the rules committee has made it impossible to defend the pass.

I've watched the other PAC 12 teams also give up more points. The PAC 12 has the best set of QBs in the nation, and the best receivers. The fact is that the spread offense, competently run, cannot be stopped, as defenses have not adjusted. Our most skilled players are on offense. We have a few outstanding D players, like Scarlet and Jefferson. The rest are a work in progress. Given the personnel issues, Kaufman has the strategy about right. Don't give up any long plays( I read we never gave up more than 30 yards in this game on any play) and elongate the drives. He sent plenty more pressure in the second half. We were missing key players in the secondary which we hopefully will get back next week.

To me, despite all the amazing offense, this game came down to our defense being better than theirs at the goal line in the second OT. Don't you think that is one helluva building block as the season progresses?

Yep - particularly after the way we lost last week. That was a huge series for our young D.

When this year is over, our defense should be in the best shape of any group of athletes anywhere.
After all, they get a thurough work out every Saturday.
Bodes well for next year, don't you think?

The defensive stats are somewhat misleading. Yes, Cal is giving up a conference worst 478 yards per game (27 more yards than #11 UCLA). However, when you look at the numbers on per play basis, we look pretty decent.

Total yards allowed per play: 5.27 (4th in conf)
Pass yards allowed per play: 6.2 (5th in conf)
Rush yards allowed per play: 3.77 (5th on conf)

For comparison, here are the rankings from last year:

Total Yards: 7.08 (Last)
Pass Yards: 9.4 (Last)
Rush Yards: 4.90 (10th)

Granted, the level of competition has been subpar so far this season, but I see significant improvement.
