I looked at him and nothing. Then I said, "We have 27 and 28 (like he'd never seen me before). So he moved literally an inch to his right. I said we'd need more room than that and he didn't move. His friend had to tell him, "They have those two seats. Move over." Plus the two women in front of us that are season ticketholders have big seat backs so between Joe Clueless, the seatbacks and the crusty curmudgeon trio, I'm out.

You should have told them you're Moragabear from Bear Insider. They would have bought you drinks the whole game.

Since the guy next to me barely scooted over and the two in front of me had seatbacks, I moved up one row to 50, with my friend staying at the end of the row in 49 so we each had more room. Good to see you, too, db and also srbear. Funny enough, I saw you both on the other side of the stadium. Hate the idea of giving up on the student side but all i know is I can't stay within earshot of those clowns anymore.

No reason to give up on the student side due to your experience, unless you prefer going to more expensive places with guaranteed better leg room. I know someone who gave up on the west side after the 2006 season to come over to the east side where fans are more civilized. I tried to tell him to be careful, even if I agreed that on the whole fans are less cranky on the east side, the annoying fans can be anywhere. I think he at least half agreed with me, but after freezing at the 2006 Big Game in the shade when the east side fans were quite comfortable in the sun, he figured as long as he had to move to get away from annoying fans, he'd come over to the sun. He moved to U, loved it and stayed there after the reopening of Memorial. He's very happy.

Unfortunately, the annoying fans can sit anywhere, at any stadium. It is at least partly a matter of luck. I'm always amused to hear different takes on who the worst fans in the conference are, and it is usually based on particular experiences of having to sit near particular fans. Me, ASU has my vote for the worst fans based on my personal experiences, but I've heard votes for pretty much every other team in the conference, and I've heard those who think ASU fans aren't bad at all (since you sat near some Bearants after moving, I wouldn't be surprised if you heard that Arizona fans are the worst after what I know some Bearants experienced the week prior).

Based on the experience of the fans I talk to, plus my limited experience in sitting other than in my seats, I think the west side has more cranky complaining fans than the east side. My friends and I have discussed this observation over the years, at one point we concluded that those who prefer the shade are generally crankier than those who prefer the sun. As your experience shows, however, generalizations only get you so far.

Best of luck in your quest for the right spot to be.

For about 6 years we sat in Section T, Row 48/49. I loved sitting there, especially come mid-October and November when the sun would thaw you out. But there was this fat f*ck and his pals who would yell crap like that every game at Tedford. Everything the team did bad was Tedford's fault and everything good was because the players ignored JT's wishes for them to fail. They yelled on just about every play about something. We even almost got in a fight when we stood up during a crucial series at the end of the game and they yelled at my friend's wife to sit her ass down. Of course, the guy who yelled this was the morbidly obese one and was the most obnoxious of all.

So, we finally moved down 15 rows and games were enjoyable again, even though the season (2012) was not. Then we moved to section HH, and now to FF. It's paradise over here. No one yells if we stand up, we have benchbacks, there is extra leg room, and we get some shade. Yes, the crowd is not nearly as rowdy and I feel like I'm making the most noise in the section, but it's a price I'm willing to pay to get away from those jerks.

If you never boo coaches, then you are better than I. I rarely boo coaches. I only flipped one off once, 2001 v. UW as the team went off at halftime. We were up 21-10. The offense was doing well, and we had a chance to go for the throat at the end of the half. We could have gotten the ball back with over a minute left and a couple of time outs, but after a Banta-Cain sack put UW at 4th down and long on their 36, Holmoe decided not to call time out before a UW punt and then we sat on the ball. I was really annoyed. Of course, we lost 31-28, and Holmoe never won another conference game.

Ah, I'll never forget the look on the faces of some bewildered UW fans after that game as a dear friend of mine, may he rest in peace, stood with me at the corner of LeConte and LaLoma and screamed about how much love Cal had shown over the years by gifting games to UW, and UW had never reciprocated. "Where's the love?" he yelled as the UW fans shuffled off, realizing that the state of California mental health care and the state of Cal football were such as to give this poor man no hope. Until he died nearly 8 years later, we would frequently talk about how out of character he had been post-game, and how out of character I had been when I gave Holmoe the finger at the end of the first half. Although Cal got a win over UW in 2002, we also agreed that when UW finally did show love for Cal was when they hired Gilby has HC, giving Cal automatic victories over UW in 2003 and 2004, and putting the program in enough of a hole that it took until 2007 before the Huskies could win another game over the Bears.

Which reminds me, I think I booed Gilby at least once or twice, even if I never gave him the finger. It takes a lot for me to boo anyone, and I haven't booed Dykes yet. Well, except early in the Sac St game when he chose to go for it on 4th down, instead of kicking the field goal, but I was mostly kidding, I had to explain to explain to a couple sitting near us that I was rooting for Langford and just wanted to see him kick a field goal longer than the 21 yarder he had at Northwestern, I didn't really have anything against Dykes' decision from a football perspective.

Still, it remains, if you don't boo coaches, you are better than I.

Dykes is pretty bad, but second year, 2-1, coming back from a two score deficit after 1 quarter? That is progress at least. That they won is secondary to the mental aspect of hanging in and being able to take the lead and eventually get a goal line stand. Losing that game in a third OT would have been fine with me, to be forthright.

I knew that you were going to counter with the 2001 UW game story. I just KNEW it.

I was in DC for the Gilby years.

I don't boo coaches at games because there are enough people within earshot of my loudness who might think I was booing the players.

One of those guys must have been the guy who sat behind me at basketball games for two seasons. I got a loud running commentary ALL GAME LONG criticizing the team and the coaches for every failed play and taking credit for every good play ("see that's the way I said to do it"). Thank God I was able to move a few years ago.

Yeah, I'm probably too predictable with things like the 2001 UW game story.

So lucky for you to miss the Gilby years. Sigh.

I'd like to think that on those extremely rare occasions I booed Gilby, it was obvious who I was booing. When mad at Gilby, I usually said, "Gilby, you MORON!!" or something similar as opposed to actually booing him, which should have kept people from thinking I was being critical of the players.

You can buy extra seats, as a club member.
For example my buddy bought two extra for clients for Big Game, $250.00 a pop.
The ATO can't control, in whose hands, those tickets end-up.

Last year Stadium Club had a lot of U$C people.

I have a different problem with our seats. We're in stadium club paying lots of dollars for our two seats. Lots of enthusiastic fans around but also lots of empty seats. ATO sold 30-40 tickets to Buff fans. Many were young and drinking heavily. Several obnoxious Buff fans taunting bear fans at the game. When we purchased the seats, we were told ATO wouldn't sell to opposing teams in clubs. It's been three seasons and it's happening more and more. We enjoy going to the games and want to support the team, but why be harassed in our seats. Home and tv are looking better and better. Calling tomorrow to complain but I doubt that it will change.

Wow. No advice here. I'd be so pissed. I can't imagine what I'd say or who I'd say it to, but the struggle to be polite after getting to someone very high up, not picking on those with no power, would be difficult, an immense hurdle.
MB has the option to move, to be with pleasant Bearants.

This is true, but you aren't supposed to be able to buy more club seats than you own (so if you have made a commitment for four seats you can buy up to four more on a per game or season basis). So this wouldn't really explain a large block of CU fans sitting all together unless one of the mega donors (who hold 16 plus blocks of seats in the Stadium Club) is selling them to opposing fans. That didn't happen. Plus setting aside the mega donors, what hard core Cal fan (which you have to be to have ESP seats) is ever selling their seats to opposing fans? It boggles the mind. I'd burn them all before I sold my seats to the enemy.

Something seems odd here.

If you can, move over to Section EE (benchbacks). Donation is $200 per seat plus season ticket costs. Legroom is better (30" vs. 24") and so is elbow room (18.5" per seat in Section EE vs. 17.5" per seat in Section T).

I feel fortunate that we were able to score seats during the Seat Selection Event this year.

Section EE is the best section in the Stadium. Populated with great fans (like me, lolz) and it is far enough away from the SC band that I don't find them to be a distraction. Can't say that when sitting in the ESP Sections or Section I.

And if someone isn't showing the appropriate spirit, he should be vested with the power and authority to have them removed, incarcerated or sent to Golden Bear rehabilitation therapy.

Been in EE for many years/decades. Was always a good section. But now that we have seat backs, a roof over our heads, legroom, it's a great place to be.

Sure, we do our fair share of complaining but mostly we are watching the game and rooting for the Bears. We are a more experienced group, so we don't stand the whole game. We know when to stand, yell, cheer, all that stuff. Makes for a nice fan environment and pleasant game day experience.

BTW, it's not easy getting seats in EE. It's a popular place for good reason. I'm happy with my seats!

Come on boys, fans are fans and part of the trade off of actually being at a game is that (unless you have season tickets and your nearby Cal friends don't give theirs away to @ssholes) is that you sit with d*ckheads..Happens all the time. Think of the moaning when Kyle Boller was a sophomore, Maynard in general, Tedford was public enemy number #1 for years..etc etc. Don't let it ruin your game. Same thing at rock concerts when you get someone next to you singing the entire time..It's part of going to live events where you can't, or don't have a choice as to who you sit with. The ones I dislike the most are the Cal fans who really are head coaches in disguise..know more about the game than our coaching staff. My wife hates it when I turn around and tell someone they really need to apply for the HC job so they can shut the F up..Don't move - speak up and tell the haters to shut up..Free speech has its limits when it comes to Cal football!

So given that these ultra-annoying fans can be anywhere, I'm curious to know what people think is the best response in these situations?

Ignore them and suffer in silence? Confront them and thus further distract yourself from what you went there to do? Go public and invoke the rest around you to rise against the annoyance?

Curious how others would handle this, besides picking up and leaving which is not always an option.

It depends: If you have children and the obnoxious fans are swearing, etc..that should be easy. But, confronting DOES work since many Cal fans are generally polite in nature, and slip into passive/aggressive behavior if anything at all..so taking the reins and simply stating that the tone is disturbing/annoying might just work - we are not a confrontational group generally - so it can work! If you have drunks on your hand (and they have stopped drinking), just be patient since the downside of drinking should kick in eventually. One trick I once used when Cal played Va Tech in the Insight Bowl (amazing game): There were four very drunk VT "fans" sitting directly behind my wife and I with those incredibly stupid noise sticks that are full of air -- bothersome as hell and loud and stupid - so I just bought them all two more beers, and voila, stupor and glassy eyed quiet idiots for the rest of the game!
