Tell someone from Asia that you went to Cal and s/he may think you are podunk. Tell that same person you went to Berkeley, and they may bow down to you on the spot.

I don't know about other countries, but in China we're known as "Berkeley University". The only people who say the full name for the UC are the ones that went to one of the UCs in a city that nobody knows about and need to bank on the California name (e.g. Davis California University). Heck, these days with all the exposure USC is getting in China if you plainly say "California University" odds are people will think you're talking about "Southern California University".

Pretty sure it has less to do with where they graduated from and more to do with the fact that most Stanfurd NFLers are white while most Cal NFLers are black (or in the case of Conte tatted up)

Same reason why everyone thinks Kaep is a moron even though he scored higher on the Wonderlic than guys like Rodgers or Romo.

Or that Kap is greedy for his huge performance based contract (that suddenly does not look like such a massive contract).

I actually think it also has to do with what your school is up to. I hate to break it to everyone, but Cal is a joke academically, despite our improvement. We can all run around the internet talking about how much harder it is to go to Cal, but that is just excuses... When you still have people saying a coach should not be fired when you have the worst APR and GSR in the entire sub division and only better than a handfull of schools in the division, no one should be taking you seriously as an academic institution.

OTOH, Stanford, regardless of the excuse making here, does seek out smart people to go to the school and play football. They have been very successfully for a while, and before that did the same thing in a little less astonishing way, but have consistently placed academics as a priority, where Cal rarely has, athletically.

If Cal wants to be seen as an academic school, we cant have the academically worst of the worse filling out the football team. We certainly cant make excuses why we are SO damn bad academically. Being a "hard" school means nothing to anyone, because everyone knows the sink or swim does NOT apply to athletes. They have all the resources the NCAA allows.

With all due respect, I have heard the "He went to Stanford. He is smart" on more than a few occasions from none other than former UCLA great Troy Aikman. He knows that Cal is comparable. Never heard Mariucci give on air compliments for "He is from Cal. He must be smart". In the case of those two perhaps it comes down to our individual players and the way they project themselves.

Strange...

Because Cal players are not smart.

Stanford seeks out smart players that are great at playing football, and have for a while.

Cal has, for a while, trailed the entire D1A in academics for Football players. It is pretty obvious why Stanford is the "smart" school while Cal is not. Cal didnt bother with Academics for so many years that we became the joke of the football world.

Why dont Cal fans understand this? What is with the ignoring of the last decade of pathetic academic standing?

At the Oregon game I saw a Cal fan try to use the "Academics" argument against an Oregon fan... the result was predictable; "Your players dont go to Class. They are not just the bottom of the Pac12, they are the bottom of the entire division." And Cal fans all still crow about "academics" as though every single team we have played in the last 5 years is not above us in APR and GSR.

We have to make HUGE adjustments (like the 3.5GPA) and wait a few years (4 or 5) before we can start claiming that Cal athletes are above the bar enough for people to start commenting on how smart they are, consistently.

EDIT: this is the image we put out. It does not reflect on ALL the players, but be serious. How is this even a question?!

Nailed it. I've coached in another sport for way too long along with a little football and the guy Desean reminds me of is Jimmy Rollins. Jimmy was undersized but was incredibly skilled and the smartest guy I ever coached (including about a dozen Stanford guys). I always said that Jimmy would be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company if he didn't play baseball.

The things he shares with Desean is an innate feel for timing and the heart and desire he displayed with his confidence and swag. The best have that!

For me it boils down to whether you think it's better to be someone known for his talent and production on the field like DeSean (not considering anything he does off the field at all) or someone like Doug Baldwin, a pretty good player who commentators need to pump up with something outside of his production on the field. You can't call him one of the most devastating WR's in the game, but you certainly can note that he played football at Stanford. No offense to Doug Baldwin, but he's maybe among the top 30-50 players in his position? DeSean's been the best deep threat in the NFL for his whole career.

You need to experience life outside of the state..."Cal" is not known the way you think it is...

No, the co-worker is an idiot because he has lived in the state for some time and does not know the difference. The further you go from the Bay Area, the more I understand that people are not sure, or don't recognize Cal as Berkeley, but someone who has lived in the state for some time and has a thimble of knowledge. C'mon. It sure as heck isn't Cal Tech. They are less likely to have a FB team they are sooooo smart.

Plenty of people live in the Bay Area and don't know Cal = Berkeley. If you don't follow college sports (true for the vast majority of people) then how would the connection ever come up in conversation? It doesn't help when schools like Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly, Cal Tech, etc. dilute the hell out of the name "Cal". Up until high school I didn't even know Cal != Cal State, and I grew up in Albany and my dad went to Cal for grad school. Every time the school was referred it was referred to as "Berkeley". At home, at school, pretty much everywhere. I used to work in the housing department, and you wouldn't believe how many parents of in-state freshman only find out about the whole Cal = Berkeley thing when they actually come during welcome week. I guess most Berkeley students are just children of idiots.

Probably because nobody knows Cal = Berkeley. Hell even my coworker who's lived in the state for almost a decade was shocked when I mentioned that Cal is Berkeley (he thought I had all this Cal stuff at my desk because Berkeley didn't have a football team...)
