What Cal Band members did "off stage" reflected the times, for sure, but they almost always had the good sense to keep things behind closed doors. I seem to remember the phrase was "Remember who you are and what you represent."

Agree--not entertaining or even slightly amusing any more. There was a time, perhaps in the early '70's, when they were interesting but like so many sequels, those versions that followed tried too hard to be like their forerunner and only came up lame. I've heard it said many times that the 'furd alum don't even like the band. I doubt the Administration does, but my guess is that they are afraid of making a significant change because the students will resent it and they will be accused of censorship. No backbone in other words.

Up until about 30 years ago the Stanfurd Band used to be relevant in that they would occasionally strike a chord with a successfully satirical halftime show. But since then, they are simply an embarrassment to the University and to themselves. For many years now their halftime shows have demonstrated pervasive lack of discipline and poor musicianship. There is no reason Stanfurd should not have a proud and premier marching band on par with the best -- Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, and Cal.

I have no doubt that the individual Stanfurd Band members were quality HS students (after all, they did get admitted to Stanfurd), and were likely very good musicians. Does joining the Stanfurd band sentence one to be an irresponsible drunk throughout their college years? It sure seems like it.

Right. This so-called punishment is just a slight slap on the wrist. The Stanfurd band is the very definition of obnoxious and insulting. That it can continue to exist in its current form speaks to the immaturity of Furd students and the timidity of the Furd administration.

You know the ironic and funny thing about these comments...many Furd alumni agree.

Very true. Unfortunately, at Furd (as at Cal) the opinion of the average alum has little weight.

There are alot of "ringers" in the band. They hold an instrument but can not play it. They cant get enough real musicians to join.
