The Grizzly Bar and Grill at Tilden was a surprise, I didn't know it was there all this time.
Wherever Freehouse is, I want to check it out.

I always liked the bartender in People's Park without any teeth. Love the brown bag special with Potter's (Fairfield's Finest).

60 years ago the Kingfish and the Monkey Inn would have made the list.

I believe Freehouse opened during the 2012 season. Maybe it was during the previous basketball season. It's pretty nice if you get there early and get a table outside. But service is kinda slow and it gets very crowded. It's very close to the Stadium, though, on Bancroft at College (right across College from Cafe Strada). It's an old Church-type building/dorm looking thing. I forget the exact history. It's certainly unique.

I keep meaning to go there, but haven't made it yet. Perhaps a non football saturday would be better, since it's always packed to the gills on gameday. Read a brief article from 2012 and it's apparently owned by the same person as strada, was formerly Adagia (a Mediterranean restaurant that I'd never heard of...), and has a full liquor license and bar.

Something is going up right now at that location, I remember the design showing a bar/restaurant but it probably won't be Raleighs.

Open today 4:30 pm 2:00 am. In 1976 owned by a Pakastani gentleman named Prim. Forgot to give a shoutout to Brennan's. I remember I was in there drinking when I saw Joe Roth's face on the TV behind the bar and I knew it wasn't good news.

There was a place below the Smokehouse on Telegraph called the Fern Bar. It had a shuffleboard and the proprietors were an elderly married couple. You would give the old guy a fiver for a drink and he would give you change for a twenty--an error I always pointed out to him. Couple and bar long dead.

Those fern bars were the worst idea ever. Any place a plant would grow is not a place I 'd care to drink. They were all over San Fancisco as well. Henry Africa's and such

I don't know when it was changed but 50 years ago hard liquor was not available for sale either on sale or off sale within a mile of the campus. Jay Vee Liquors located on University at the old Santa Fe station was the first place you could buy booze on that street. Berkeley Square across the street was the first bar. Spenge'rs and Brennan's at the foot of University were popular. Spenger's at one time sold more alcohol then any other restaurant West of the Mississippi.

Berkeley Square in the 80's was awesome! What was it like in the early days before it became a punk rock bar?

What about Cheshire Cat (the ultimate s-hole and less than a block from campus on Northside) and Shattuck Ave. Spatts (which, I see, recently closed)? I still miss Bertola's: You could take a date there and, if she stayed with you after, you knew she loved you for you.

Regarding the list, I wanna try the first place (in S. Berkeley)... Molly's, whatever it's called. Comal? Sure, if you're an Oakland hipster/techie, but that's not a Cal student place.

East Bay Spice Company on Oxford near Center (across from campus) is our personal favorite.

The new Kingfish is not only open, but a huge upgrade. The original structure was moved intact, but now there's a great large back patio with a separate bar and tv's. And oh - did I mention how a huge chunk of the old Harmon/Haas floor welcomes you as you enter the front door?

many beer-soaked nights spent drinking there, or pitchers from Lavall's in the courtyard there, when I lived in Euclid Hall.

Wow, if we are talking about s***holes from the past, I can't believe that no one has mentioned Manny's yet. Manuel's in the Durant grotto was THE place for underage drinking in the late 80s. I was in with Leslie, the huge doorman, and life was good.

Stumble out, grab 2 donuts, and begin the walk home. If I had a dollar for every time I did that...

..and I think there was a bar called Jerry's Stop Sign down University or thereabouts where people went to line up "dancers" for parties. I think Eddie Money had a tie in to the place if memory serves.
