The Grambling State Band would have blown away the great Ohio State Marching Band yesterday. Their sound and energy were amazing. The Cal Band looking bad in comparison? Not a big deal to me.

This was a bit of a bummer, but i think this can be fixed... I liked they did it, the players were responding... They just need to wait a little longer and just need to have the PA cut the music. I talked with some fokls today about that and think we can definitely have that fixed.

There was a YouTube during camp where one of the players joked that what they need for success is for everyone on the team to love football as much as one of the dl (Manley I think?) loves honey mustard.
CaliforniaGoldenBear;842536964 said:
Maybe if they filled their seats. All those empty prime seats are embarrassing, and disrespectful to the team.
MisterNoodle;842537017 said:
Thanks. That is somewhat obscure. Between not knowing what Guardians of the Galaxy and Honey Mustard were, I was feeling like a little lost.

There are plenty of empty seats on both sides of the stadium, I assure you.
MisterNoodle;842537027 said:
It would be great if the ATO could figure out a way to let people who have less desirable season tix upgrade to the seat backs on game day, maybe for a reasonable charge. You would need the seat back ticket holders to actually tell the ATO they aren't coming to the game, and somehow broadcast which seats are available for game-day upgrade. There is probably a technological solution.

I don't expect the Cal Band to have the volume of an all brass band like Grambling, Ohio State or USC.

Best band I've ever seen.
Think how great the Grambling State-Southern halftime must be live.
HaasBear04;842536505 said:
Yeah, the lack of brass is definitely a problem.

Interesting how a band of the same size is so much louder than the other! The current band director is lazy and won't make any changes. The fact the band's lack of brass makes them inaudible and they stray from tradition with lethargy is sad.Bob Calonico has been called out on this, but he's incapable of campaigning for positive change. If the band was allowed to fund raise; they could have a huge endowment:they could recruit better musicians. There is no one there to fight the bureaucracy. Last guy who did internally was forced out of his position at Cal. They have virtually eliminated anyone on campus with a connection to Cal culture. It's a Clusterf**k.
Interesting fun fact: there were more than 300 people in the University Club Saturday, most wearing caps. All that I saw said "Cal" or something very close. One person had a "Berkeley" cap"-the chancellor!!

I was going to wait and ponder whether to post this - but seems to be the right fit in this thread. And I know up front I may royally p$ss some of you off.
I found the band's halftime show today extreeeemely amateurish, junior-high school level stuff. 'Guardians of the Cal-axy' - really? With dressed-up dancers,
and waltzing around Oski and a Tree-wannabe, with some lame storyline? I've noticed this for the last several years - there's just no creativity there. Yup, I
know it's a student-run organization. Yup, I know it's early in the season. Yup, I know they work hard (I've played various instruments most of my life) and
practice a lot. I honestly think they can (and have) done much better than what I saw today (remember the Thriller piece? Or George Smoot on the field?).
And no, I don't expect them to match up to the Grambling Tiger Band. But especially on a day like today, great crowd - that's the best we can do? Some
of the brightest, most creative students on the planet? No one I was with appreciated the performance; in fact were embarrassed. And I noticed the crowd
around me on the west side completely turned off when the Cal band hit the field.
Cal is a world-class institution, with interesting, exciting things going on; the band should reflect that; embrace that. Simply have to do better.

I think the sound impression depends a lot on which side of the field you sat on. Grambling played exclusively to the alumni side, our band to the student side.
We did lose the halftime, no doubt about that but they're in a different league, much as the two football teams.

I agree that the Guardian stuff veered dangerously into Furd band territory.
Golden One;842537083 said:
I agree. I'm a big supporter of the Cal Band, but that skit they did yesterday was like something the Stanfurd band would do. It was very amateurish and beneath them. They should stick to marching and playing music and forget about doing skits during halftime. Leave that crap to the Stanfurd band, which routinely embarrasses themselves.

Well, at least they didn't orchestrate a penis entering our rival's mascot's behind like the Kansas State band.

I don't have a video link but here's the actual schematic and a photo. And I stand corrected. The penis was going into the Jayhawk's mouth, not his rear end. (That last sentence is one that I never thought I'd type.)

Best line about the bands from Bruce Jenkins: Having the Grambling band play before the Cal Band is like Hendrix opening for the Carpenters.

You just summed up a major reason why I didn't renew season tickets after 27 consecutive seasons. I can't stand the piped-in music between plays and when I watch at home I miss that, plus all the trivia, hype and blather (kids yelling, no-chance field goal tries, etc.) that we get at the games now. I really enjoyed the Cal songs when the band played them, but now apparently trivia and commercials are more important. My mute button stops all the nonsense at home, the bathroom is 20 feet away, and the broadcast is free after I pay my cable fees. After a win I can play Palms of Victory from my Cal songs tape, which is old but still works, since the band apparently doesn't do that anymore, either.
mountainpete;842537204 said:
But they do play Palms after the game.
