I loved their happy hour special and the Newcastles ales on tap back in the day. Huge beers for pretty cheap.

that's not quite it. i don't like the fact that it's not a welcoming, on-campus college bar with some Cal themes, whether that's colors, decorations, or otherwise.

being "modern" i'm sure has something to do with it. but im not a design snob, so i dont the right terms for it lol

and hope they can post a menu soon so i can see if the ugly inside is worth overlooking :beer:

I dunno, kips has cleaned itself up a lot in the last couple of years, got rid of the kips smell, and serves a ton of microbrews. Is it really the same? It was also pretty empty before the game saturday. It was almost a place I could see someone in their 30's watching a few CFB games.

For me the red herring in those photos is the smallish bar and the silverwear wrapped in napkins on all the tables, even on the patio. Are they going to be doing mostly seated table service? They didn't have any signs up saying it was closed for a private event on Saturday, so we tried to go in (and were turned around once inside). Kind of felt like it was set up to have a hostess and assigned seating. I would really miss the open seating aspect at any bar. Just come in and have a few, and have friends come and go when they please. That gets hard when they seat parties. (I don't know, perhaps my impression was wrong on the seating).


It also had no high tables that I could see, so it just didn't have the bar feel. Those big U shaped bars at the old Bear's Lair and Raleigh's patio were great for getting served and also made them more casual walk up and go places. Also checked out the Freehouse which was a major disappointment since it was all host seated tables and a tiny bar. Definitely not a great gameday place. It would have been nice if they turned the bar room into open seating with high tables. (I would not like being seated near the bar in that room either as you have all these people pushing through to the bar basically ass at face level).

Overall, the place looks more suited for the general public and alumni rather than students but that's fine by me.
