Pac12 refs only threw 3 flags against us. What about you guys?

Last year Pac12 refs were penalty crazed fiends. Did you guys notice a reduction in penalties called by your crew?

3 was our magic number too I think. Don't worry though I'm sure they'll still count skipped passes as touchdowns for you guys when we play as per tradition.

Maybe Larry Scott talked some sense into the refs.

Cool trends!!!

Don't know whether to laugh or cry at this.

Does this mean we can start holding now and get away with it? If Oregon is doing it....

I believe it's been stated already by the Pac-12 office that there's a focus on "improving the flow of the game"....which I take to mean less penalties. Expect a lot less holding and PI calls this year.

I believe they are saving the hankies for conference play.
Don't want to have to wash the grass stains off too many times.
It takes too much water.

Yep. Agree with heartof; this false sense of leaving us alone is only the set-up for conf play beat-down again. That's where the refs put the glove on we bend over.

They gonna let Arizona pipe in the phony crowd noise again?

'Flow of the game' my ---.

Posted this in another thread, but I definitely noticed the refs not calling some things (particularly PIs) that they would have called in years gone by in our game. Wasn't sure if this was just our crew or part of a larger Pac 12 push to clean up some of this ridiculousness. I'm glad to hear it may be part of a broader push. Definitely helped speed up the game.

yep ... it appears in the first game calls that we would have caught flags in recent past did not .. mcmorris had one or two false starts not called ...

the incidental contact between db and receiver that would just about all the time get a flag .. not so much on Saturday

lets see if it is a trend .. the calls made werent bad ... the PI / personal foul and then vic's fumble ... too close to overturn ... had no business fumbling " MY BALL" at all get the yards and run another play dammit and we will give the ball right back to you...

i think team execution might be a factor

If the refs are purposely not making calls in these less-important OCC games, I am worried that our players will get careless and acquire bad habits that will be penalized later. And how damaging will it be if the Texas game refs are more picky and unexpectedly throw their flags at crucial points in the game?

will it be a big ten crew working the game ?

I think everyone is reading too much into this. Cal played a pretty clean game. The DB's were not out of position like they've been in recent years so there was no need to call PI's. I'm sure the refs wanted the game to flow because it was 66-0 after 3. Why prolong it.

Yea, I think in both USC's game and ours, the refs are going to hold off on making calls as much as possible to keep the game moving. The outcomes were decisive pretty early, so at that point, the refs just want to move the game along and only call things that have an impact on safety or are so egregious that you have to throw a flag to make sure that teams are still playing somewhat within the rules.

Well, having watched part of your game against that youth football team, I have to say that I believe the refs were just operating with a lower quota during your game....
Clearly, they should have had extra laundry with all the misbehaving that goes on down in South Central...

Maybe we won't need to recruit those two Texas high school kids to come "play" in a Pac-12 game.

There are two issues: 1) too many ticky tack calls and 2) Obvious bias in calls favoring certain teams (and last year and previous years hurting Cal).

Hopefully this is a sign that there is an improvement in #1. With #2 it will remain to be seen, but I wouldn't mind if for once we got the benefit of the calls in that home stretch against UCLA, USC, Oregon and especially Stanford.

Yeah....

Last year against Sac State we pulled down a combined 200 yards on 19 penalties with the game 55-14 after 3.

Against Presbyterian we pulled a combined 185 yards on 18 penalties.

This year it was 97 yards on 11 penalties.

I would say that is significant.

It was another thread, but the average for the conference after week 1 is about 5+ penalties per team. Let's see how that changes against stiffer competition...

We only had three. GSU had more, but the game flowed better all the way around.
In the case of Cal and SC I'd give the refs partial credit. Both our teams are a lot more experienced, you're gonna have fewer penalties. Don't give Larry Scott all the credit.

New leader of Pac-12 officiating wants consistency, accountability, communication, transparency...Unless David Coleman new head of officiating has fired the lot of Pac 12 officials, expect more of the same old...love the fact that we only committed 3 fouls, and hope its a sign of good coaching and discipline, BUT!!! after 47 years of watching bogus call after bogus call by these idiots, I have no faith that there will be major change...An official overseeing the officials, what a unique concept...
