I have a vague recollection of Oregon State, maybe 15 years ago, on the road at Baton Rouge. A freshman kicker, who would later win the Groza award missing multiple extra points, including one at the end, either to tie or win it.

Yes, Alexis Serna against #3 LSU in 2004. One of the more infamous Mike Riley losses, against Nick Saban no less.

I thought Sernas misses against LSU were shortish field goals?

Amazing that the next season he won some kind of national kicking award.

That game ended on a missed extra point? I thought it was a Hail Mary? And there are plenty of those every season

In the NFL, I think the New Orleans Saints kicker missed an extra point against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It would have sent the game into overtime.

The Washington State game last year ended on a missed 19 yd FG, not an extra point.

But the ball was on the 2 yard line the normal location of a PAT, however it was on a hash mark making a more difficult kick. WSU should have taken a delay of game penalty and moved the ball back 5 yards. However no one asked me and my consulting fees are outrageous.

i don't think i've ever seen exactly the same ending, but i've seen plenty of embarrassing last-second letdowns, and we're usually on the wrong side of those.

1976. Texas - OU. Without getting into background ,blood was boiling on both sides coming in. Texas holds OU to two first downs and has the ball at about its own 40 with about 5:30 left clinging to a 6-0 lead. Up until that point probably the best defensive effort I have ever seen. Ivy Suber fumbles the ball away and all of the sudden OU catches fire- they march down field and score with seconds left. 6-6. OU misses extra point - want to say bad snap but it has been too long. No OT back then so ends in tie. Got a good look at Royal as he left field - just ashen, devastated. He retired abruptly at the end of that season and I always thought this game was reason. Strangest thing was 72,500 filing out of Cotton Bowl in complete silence- both fan bases crushed.

If that's the game I was thinking of, the touchdown was scored on a The Play-like return. Not as pretty as the Play, but still bonkers. And then the kicker missed the extra point. Unlike Saturday, there was no time on the clock. I was listening on the radio on the way to pick someone up from the airport. It was a crazy few minutes.

The Saints were truly a comical disaster of epic proportions prior to the arrival of Sean Payton.

2003 Saints at Jaguars. YouTube link. Definitely thought of the same thing.

One can argue that that miss cost us the Rosebowl. We were passed over by kneepads Brown and Texass because of a few decimal points in the computer rankings. An OSU win at LSU would have helped our point total as we beat OSU that year. It would have likely been enough to keep us ahead of the groveling coach and his dishonest buddies who dropped our ranking

there will be a lot more of these because the NFL moved back the extra kick line

Now THAT, slotright20, is a million-dollar slice of college football history. In my initial thread, I should have been more specific about the missed extra point, not field goal. The silent, collective exit is quite the tableau.

Also hardest hitting game I ever saw plus the unforgettable story of ABC deciding it would be a good idea to have President Ford meet and shake hands with Switzer and Royal together pre- game. Those coaches absolutely hated one another. As this is taking place some drunken Okie bellows " hey who are those two a-holes with Switzer?" I did not actually hear that but have heard from the referee ( years later - he was a longtime Judge) it is true. Texas had caught OU spying on their practices and those players spent most of the game trying to kill one another.

like that? nope. but tops in the category of surprise endings by cal in texas is RonRivera's 1983 "remember the alamo" heroics.

snipped from Jeff Farudo's "Bear Talk" column, link: http://www.ibabuzz.com/beartalk/2011/01/11/football-ron-riveras-greatest-cal-moment/
Quote:

The score was tied at 17-all with 1:20 left when Randy Pratt kicked a 28-yard field goal to put the Bears in front. But the Aggies were flagged for roughing Pratt and Cal coach Joe Kapp made the questionable decision to take the points off the board and take a first down at the 2-yard line.

The theory was the Bears could run some more clock and probably score a touchdown to ice the game. Instead, quarterback Gale Gilbert fumbled the snap and A&M recovered.

Defeat seemed certain. Two plays later, on second-and-9 from the 4, Sherrill called for a sweep to the right. Fullback Jimmie Hawkins got the ball in the end zone and Rivera knifed through the line to tackle him for the game-winning safety with 57 seconds left.
