Please no. It would be August 27th and Cal would scrap the South Dakota State game on September 3 to have a bye right after. I just don't see that any good can come from this. I know we need a kicker, but come on.

Yup. This is what has been in the works for awhile now. Sounds like it's closer to being a reality.

If we have a bye and some accommodation for more practice time to make up for the travel, and if it is at worst neutral on the finances (that is probably a big if since we lose the home game), I'm okay with it. I don't see it being a big benefit, but would be fun for the players and better than South Dakota.

What's wrong with scrapping SDakota State? Besides us losing a home game, I think it'd be fun to travel. Hawaii would also give us better competition, but not so tough where we might actually worry about losing the game

Do we get to play 13 games due to the Hawaii game? Do we get extra monetary incentive to play there?

1. As long as the program is guaranteed a profit (since this is for the Pac-12's benefit, not ours), it's OK.

2. For the team as long as they get plenty of time to recover, it could be fun, although it seems this would be bad from an academic standpoint since school will have already started (right?) and this will cost the players more time.

3. For fans that means one less home game (sucks), and it's too expensive and time-disruptive for most fans to go to this game, so yeah it's a loss for fans. If the game is scheduled for Melbourne there's a chance I would try to get to the game, but if it's anywhere else then no.

I agree with OTB here. It's not a terrible deal. Having the bye week after is the only way that this is even remotely doable. If we are able to schedule a 13th game and/or there is a greater financial incentive then I'm all for it. Great opportunity for the kids to travel to someplace they may not ever get a chance to do otherwise. Positives outweigh the negatives for me.

I've been told it will be very financially attractive to Cal (part of why we continued to push on it after the Baylor thing fell apart). On the 13th game, I asked about that (it seems only fair) and didn't get the impression that was in the cards. If we're giving up South Dakota (which is the plan) we'd have to replace them with someone else and finding another team at this late date seems unlikely. Put differently, if we had the chance to play 13 games next year, we wouldn't be cutting South Dakota loose.

I imagine we're still paying out South Dakota State?

Usually there is a buy-out (guaranteed money), which I suspect the sponsor of the Aussie game is paying. I assume Hawaii has a similar issue. Playing Hawaii is good from a recruiting standpoint.

Last question, for anyone who may know, I can see why Cal wants this... but why is Australia so hard for us?

Do they get free Foster's?

Do they have to speak Australian?

Will David Lonie serve as ambassador?

I'm ok with it if we also schedule a home-and-home with Hawaii.

this is great. We need the exposure. I like it. Although the weather will suck.

I'd agree to this game only if the team is treated to a meal at Attica in Melbourne. On 2nd thought, they may not fully appreciate the format of the restaurant.

They think it's the Cal RUGBY team that will be coming to play.

Beware - the basketball coaches gave our kids 2 weeks off after the recent Australia trip, and the players I spoke with said they needed it all. And they didn't even have a game scheduled when they got home.

The guys on the team are supposed to be students too. And they are going to go to Australia at the beginning of a term??? This just seems like too much.

I don't see why we'd get 13 games. The 13 game exemption is for road games at Hawaii, because Hawaii was having trouble getting any OOC opponent to come to Hawaii. This is not that.

Additionally, I don't think we'd WANT 13 games. We'd need to schedule at least one bye after the game, but that will prove difficult given the current schedule. Hopefully we can do something like schedule the Australia game the Wednesday or Thursday before Labor Day, and then have a bye in week 2 - giving the team a full 17 days off to recover. But that means we'd have to move the game at SDSU, which would be tough to get them to agree to. And even then - you then have to play 11 straight games to finish the year.

Maybe you schedule it Wed/Thurs before Labor Day, take 10 days off, play the weekend after Labor Day vs an FCS opponent, and save your bye for later. But right now we have SDSU there, followed by Texas.

I hate this plan. It's going to screw with the rest of the season.

Would prefer them play a few miles from where I live, but I guess I could get behind a trip to Oz possibly.

If you want exposure play in Jerry World, South Bend, Baton Rouge, or Ann Arbor. Nobody will care about this.

+1

(Also, nobody in Australia will care about it, either. Or they will care about it as much as every time the NFL plays a game at Wembley, which is not much.)

Is Sandy still the AD?

This is going to be disastrous for the players and the team. If you have done any travel half way around the world, you know how long it takes for the body to readjust and recover. On top of that, these kids are in the middle of classes and they have to get back to practice.

Just shows u how desperate Cal is for money. I don't think Sonny wants this, and if he wins 8-9 games this year, I don't think he'll stick around.
