The Good:
We won! I can hardly remember the last time I felt this good about Cal Football (probably Zack Follet's play against Miami at the end of the 2008 Emerald Bowl). Our defense stepped up BIG TIME! This game proved we can beat a halfway decent team, even without a very good offensive performance. Also, our kicker didn't miss anything (though his field goals were a bit rickety).

The Bad:
Today proved that our offense, while very explosive, is hardly unstoppable. Our receivers appear to have regressed a step from last year. They are still uber talented. But there were a ton of dropped balls. It looked at times as though they heard footsteps. Our O-Line looked bad at times. We need Lasco back. Our kickoffs and coverage really sucked (after the first kickoff). We are still without an impressive kick or punt return (much less a TD) this year.

Top 25?:
Maybe, but probably not until next week. Georgia Tech and BYU definitely drop out of the Top 25. But we currently sit at 29 (AP) and 35 (Coach's). We could use a little help from Hawaii (vs. 22 Wisconsin), Kentucky (vs. 25 Missouri), Ball State (vs. 17 Northwestern), and/or Arizona State (vs. 19 USC). Texas A&M and Zona might drop out if they lose, or they might hang on somewhere at the bottom of the Top 25. Regardless, it will be very hard to keep us out of the Top 25 if we bounce back and run up the score against WSU next week.

Agree with everything except I think we'll crack the 25 this week. Also, I doubt we'll have an opportunity to run up the score against WSU. I think it will be another fourth quarter battle.

Bad: Should have been up 35-7 or 42-7 in the first half. However, still won.

You're putting a lot of faith in the voters. I don't think they will let us leapfrog 4 teams (AP) or 14 teams (Coach's) after a pretty close win against Washington.

Pretty much agree with you on all points. Though I'm hopeful a better D and having this game at home will allow us to finish with a comfortable-but-nowhere-near-dominating lead.

Go Bears!!

I don't disagree with you, but how many undefeated teams have two road wins against power 5 teams? We should be ranked.

We're also on the media radar which seems to make a huge difference with the voters.

Of course we "should." I agree 100%. But I doubt it happens. UW is now 2-2, Texas is 1-3.

Texas could have really helped us out if they were able to hold on against 24 Oklahoma State.

Bad day at the office from our receivers today, but that is not going to be the norm this season.

The way UCLA is running up the score, Zona definitely drops out.

Texas got robbed. The refs in that game were bad, like 2014 Big Game bad.

#20 GT, #22 BYU, and #26 Tenn have already lost today, also #25 Mizzou is losing to Kentucky in the 4th quarter

We beat a very good team today. I don't think we will face a better defense the rest of the year. I could give a s**t if we are ranked next week. This is a very good team that is coming together and has a chance of beating any team they play this year.

Frankly I don't care about rankings at this point. Roll up a few more wins and keep playing hard.

I don't care about our rank right now. The first half of the season you have to just collect as many wins as you can. Once you hit mid-October, then you start poll watching.

We will face several defenses as good or better than UW's this year. Washington plays tough D. But they aren't stanfurd, utah, or ucla.

Florida, Miami, NC State, & Iowa are all undefeated and not ranked. Throw in 1-loss Michigan which mean no top 25 YET..

Thanks for reminding me to check on Michigan. Wow! They shut-out BYU? 105 total yards? Harbaugh is once again on his way to making a big impact his first season...

Yes UT is 1-3, with all losses against top 25 teams (Cal will be ranked). I see that team still causing havoc in the Big 12. That win will look better as the year goes on. (I'd say they're better than UW.)

Go Bears!!

Are they supposed to be better than ucla's defense?

eeeeehhh, rankings

I've posted before about my belief in the ADHD dynamic of the Bears and rankings, about how they see a number and believe in the number while not actually playing on the field when the game time comes to prove that the number is credible. I'd rather they be ranked 50 and play like a #10 then be ranked a #10 and see them play like a 50. Leave them as a sleeper for as long as they can, that's my vote.

Rankings scare me

Texas is going to start the year 1-5. No one is going to be impressed that we beat them by 1.

WSU is not the team that lost to Portland Community College the 1st week.
They are much better.
Someone mentioned that UW is not a trap game but WSU could be.
WSU is just as good as UW this year.
If Cal is not fully healthy on the OL, anything can happen.

+1, and BYU, Missouri and Geo Tech have helped that cause immensely (the low hanging fruit). Now the question is how much to some of the higher up losing teams fall?

As a long time Cal fan I have learned don't worry about the rankings. Worry about the wins.

Utah has a better D. But we got a chance in any game

After injuries no UCLA d is not better. And no furd is not better they don't have the horses on DL

Well, shucks. I guess the voters aren't as dumb as I thought. We are #22 (in the ESPN power ranking)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously -- How can Stanfurd be #16, Northwestern #17, and USC #18? Northwestern is undefeated. They smoked stanfurd. And stanfurd smoked USC. Neither stanfurd nor USC should be ranked at all, much less sandwiched around Northwestern.
