LINK: Norwegians Are Literally Using 'Texas' As Slang for 'Crazy' Now

Quote:

Texas is many things to many peoplea state the size of a medium-sized country; home to several idiot governors, one who became president, and a current one who thinks it's a good idea for college students to openly carry firearms. To Donald Trump, Texas is the place where a "big, beautiful wall" should be built. To people in Norway, "texas" with a small "t" is a synonym for crazy, bonkers, out of control and wild. As in, that's totally texas. Or in Norwegian: det var helt texas..."it is absolutely texas".

Texas Monthly discovered this hilarious (or humbling, depending on your perspective) piece of slang on a Tumblr page. The magazine accumulated several pieces of evidence that this is really a thing in Norway, and gave these examples:

  • Here is an article from Aviso Nordland from March 2014 about reckless international truck drivers traveling through the northern part of the country. Norwegian police chief Knut Danielsen, when describing the situation, tells the paper that "it is absolutely texas."
  • Here's one from a 2012 edition of Verdens Gang, a Norwegian tabloid, in which Blackburn Rovers soccer manager Henning Berga Norwegian former star who played for the British teamdescribes the atmosphere at a match between the Rovers and the rival Burnley Clarets as "totally texas."
  • And here's a fisherman telling the local news about the rare swordfish he caught in Northern Norway: "I heard a loud noise from the bay, but I did not know where it came from right away. Thirty seconds to a minute later it jumped out in the fjord. I got to see some of it before I took up the camera," he says and continues: "It was totally texas!"-

Bingo. The soccer rivalry and swordfish sounds like our kind of stuff. They would not honor any other state in this fashion. Plus we could kick the sht out of Norway in about six hours.

While I don't think that the Norwegians were thinking about college football...just the batshit crazy mentality of SOME {I'm sure a good portion are just normal conservative folk with the odd moderate thrown in} Texans....(Jade Helm anyone?)....not trying to start a political flame...please don't take it there...

But it does work so well in the college football mindset.

As in "the ending of the Michigan-Michigan State game was the most Texas thing I've ever seen!"

Oh, yeah. I guess that one works here, too.

My thoughts....could this possibly go down as supplanting "cooging it?"

One thing that's annoying about Texas is they always have to make everything about Texas. Example: when Texas hosted the super bowl in 2004 and again in 2011, in both instances, they unfurled a huge 80-yard Texas state flag on the field as part of the pre-game festivities. No actual team from Texas was playing in the super bowl those years. In every other super bowl venue, that would have been an American flag, but not in Texas. They have to somehow make it all about their state. Can you imagine any other state doing this?

Haha. I just lived in Denmark for almost four years and I was like "that was totally Texas"?? The literal translation is the same in Danish, but apparently the "real" meaning is only in Norwegian.

" if the Comanches had taken a lesson from what happened on the San Saba- and apparently they had not -it would have been that the nature of the game had changed completely. The Texans were not the Spanish or the Mexicans. They were tougher, meaner, almost impossible to discourage, willing to take absurd risks to secure themselves a plot of dirt, and temperamentally well suited to the remorseless destruction of native tribes. They did not rely on a cumbersome, heavily mounted, overly bureaucratized, state- sponsored soldiery; they tended to handle things themselves, with volunteers who not only were not scared of Indians but actually liked hunting them down and killing them.". Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne , paperback, page 82.

Boys - that is some beautiful writing from a 2010 bestseller. And most of you are appalled and most of you do not get it. But we are different and would not want it any other way. And I will be there next September in the flesh and I will make myself easy to find if any of you care to discuss it any further.

Great book. The Comanches were murderous savages facing even greater savages.

Read "The Son" by Philip Meyer if you haven't

I thought that was hilarious, so I sent the link to Norwegian friends in three different Norwegian cities. Their responses were unequivocal.

"Been doing that for years, so not exactly news. We have an area in Haugesund that's been known as Texas-byen (Texas-town) for as long as I can remember..."

"Haha, yes indeed, this is a very common expression here. Usually I would use it for a situation that is chaotic or out of control I read one of those articles and saw some comments that seemed indignant and wanted to get back at Norway for it "

"Yes, it is. There is actually a 'complete Texas' outside my office just now."

So there you go. Now I wonder if they say this in Sweden as well.

In totally unrelated news, a very large California flag will be displayed in Pasadena as support for the Cal Bears.
