The 2nd Quarter was the worst in the history of football

OK, I don't have the stats to back that up, but I can't conceive of anything worse, given the complete ineptitude on both sides of the ball. The Bears punted on every possession (except for the one where time ran out), the Ducks scored a TD on every possession.

OT: Speaking of a bad quarter/half. Anyone see Duke's performance against North Carolina yesterday? (My son is a Duke grad.) Duke gave up more points in the first half, 38, than they had in the first half of their previous 8 games combined. Anyone for a Duke - Cal bowl game?

As a grad of both Cal and Duke, these last few weeks have been hard times. Really hard times. I want my mommy.

No need for hyperbole ("worst in history").
The results speak for themselves with no need for comparison, unless you like to measure the degree of odor from various piles.

You sir are gifted with short-term memory. Do you recall the beating by the mediocre toejammers led by Barkeley in the Tedford era? I think they were up by 40 at half time. It was the first time I walked away from a Cal football at half time.

Nah. It was just like most quarters between P5 and FCS teams.

Was that when JT said "enough is enough", pulled Booya and brought in Levy, who took us to the Axe then a bowl win.

Of course, in a final game we were ahead.
JT got pissed when he wanted to run out the clock, but Levy and the team thought our senior walk-on RB deserved a TD for having played well and selflessly. The team overrode JT and got the guy his TD on a long-yardage play on 4th down.
JT furiously yanked Levy's helmet but JT had already lost the team, but not the game because the team took over and won.

But we won the second half!

It wasn't even the worst quarter in the past 3 years. Stop reading now unless you want awful flashbacks and there are other bad ones but these always stood out as historically bad to me..

@UO 2013 - 1st quarter
Fumble

Punt(yay!)

@UA 2014
4th quarter - 36 points given up - 5 drives - 5 TDs

That was 2005, when we had talent everywhere except at QB. Levy was good enough to win the Big Game and the Vegas Bowl. Levy came iback n for the final play of the 2006 Holiday Bowl, the beat down of aTm.

jankoski is referring to Tedford's god-awful final season of 2012 (and he's right...at times like this, short term memory loss *is* a blessing.)

Especially when Dykes already holds so many "worst in history" titles. 1) worst Cal football record ever (no Division wins). 2) worst defense in NCAA history(2013) 3) worst pass defense in NCAA history (2014). Also plenty of biggest losses ever against various teams. Actually pretty amazing he is still coach.

This is an interesting philosophical point -- is it worse to end a possession with a turnover, or a punt? A turnover is infuriating; a punt is just soul-deadening depressing.

In that Arizona game (I wouldn't think it physically possible to score 5 TDs in a quarter) at least the offense was doing something, even if the defense had checked out early. Last night it was both sides that stunk.

I think it was when he said we won the second half after SC put the water boys on the field.

In.

Been a grim Fall. Have a three way bet going on Cal's, Duke's, and UNC's year end Sagarin rating. Holes will win that easily. Even our favorite Chapel Hill bar is closing.

okay ... and, like jankoski, that 2012 Big Game was the first ever in which half time was enough for me and I turned it off.
Unfortunately, so far for late games, it's becoming a habit. Wonder when it will spread to day games (BG this year?)

Have we all forgotten the Holmoe year?

2001 - U$C received the ball at the start of the game AND after halftime

Happened @ UW in 2007 as well. But that game was really the nadir in the history of Cal (not just football). Good times!

You may want to start a gingko biloba regimen. That second quarter was slightly below average for Cal football.

Now I feel a challenge, to see if there's anything to my hyperbolic claim. I know there have been horrible quarters (USC 2012 is an excellent example) but it would be interesting to quantify it in terms of point differential and yardage differential.

I knew it was bad but being numb to all the bad performances the last several years, I did not notice. I will have to go back and review.
