"Winning at their place in a game where we had no chance of winning -- that was the talk. They were ranked, we weren't ranked," said Vereen, 26, who rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns that day. "We got The Axe, and it was awesome.

Awesome. Any eligibility left? If I recall correctly, he got a year's worth of carriers in the '09 Big Game alone. We could use him.

Ha. Asked and answered. Come on back Shane. Don't let those pesky rules about returning to college after going pro stand in your way. I'm sure we can find you a loophole - we have a lot of good lawyers on this board.

McClure said he's never touched The Axe, the prize that goes to the winner in the 118-year-old series.

"I haven't even seen it in person, face to face," he said. "I've only seen it through pictures or on TV. It'll be a great feeling to touch The Axe. We've got to get it back."

Agreed. Big Game or not, 42 carries for 193 yards and 3 TDs is a hell of a game. Can the 2015 Cal OL channel the spirit of the 2009 Cal OL that played Stanford?

Shane would be the only one on our sideline that actually touched the Axe. I'm not sure Andre Carter did. That is sad! I'm sure I'm missing someone, but you get the picture.

Edit: OK maybe Tarik Glenn but that's about it. Oh, if Mikey Mo is going to be at the game, of course he's held The Axe. He also has Andrew Luck's football.

Yes, and his TD catch in the 2008 Big Game also didn't suck. Go to the 18-second mark.

That was a brilliant one. Why don't we do that with Mohammed or Watson on occasion, since we need a little more speed on the outside?

Posted in another thread, but so good gotta put it here. As I said in that thread, Daniel, Vic, Kalfani and Tre need to do their best combined impression of Shane Vereen to keep Hogan/McCaffrey off the field so much they start to squirm.

To add additional perspective to the 2009 Big Game, in the previous two weeks the furdies beat #8 Oregon 51-42 and #9 USC 55-21. That was the SC game where Harbaugh attempted a 2-pt conversion after the 7th TD to try to make sure they scored at least 50 pts. They were on a roll, playing very well at that point in the season.

Also, in the week before the Big Game, Cal played this game:

And two weeks before the Big Game, Cal lost Jahvid Best in that horrific flight into the end zone.

To add additional additional perspective to the 2009 Big Game, Tiger Woods was booed -- and it was considered OUTRAGEOUS that people would actually boo such a great player/good dude. Five days later, however....

Letourneau reports that Cam Jordan will also be at the game. Well he doesn't actually say that but I'm assuming.

Connor Letourneau said:

Cameron Jordan will address the team after practice Friday. A first-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2010, the former Cal defensive end went in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft to New Orleans. His Saints are on a bye this weekend.

Great paydays for him, but too bad his team is in the dumps. At least he can always laugh to the bank.

Shane Vereen is probably my favorite under appreciated Bear ever. He followed some of the toughest acts in our history, stepping in after Lynch, Forsett, and Best. I didn't realize how much we'd miss him, but man did we miss him.

That 2009 team was something though. After getting blasted by UO/USC in consecutive weeks, it pulled itself together. If we hadn't lost that UW game it probably would have been the last time we were ranked to finish a season, and it would have been in the teens.

Cam had a bye week and he'll spend time coming to the Big Game and talking to the team beforehand.
Shane is very much in Cal.
Marshawn has been around, plus the ex-players on staff who made it in the pros.

Maybe furd can have Skov talk about the value of targeting, especially if the refs are blind, brain-dead or paid off.

Woods career is done ... and he did it to himself ... perfect ... hubris always wins. Maybe he can return to furd for a degree as his professional career has self-destructed by his chosen personal actions.

Wonder if KindaSleazy Rice will be on the field to administratively emulate that 'band', maybe talk about how losing the Axe would be the equivalent of a mushroom cloud.

Regardless of the game score, furd has a infamous crowd of privileged Losers, going back to and through Hoobert Hehver, not to mention the robber baron who established the junior college.
