I'm not joking, I know two guys who've done this. One of them's married to a furdie. The other seems to have no excuse.

Both appear to have gone over to the dark side around 2011-12. They live in the South Bay, have furd season tix, attend games, wear furd gear, and broadcast their furd love all over facebook. I don't think they've done the unthinkable and worn red at Memorial Stadium while rooting against us, but I'm not sure.

Their reason is the usual "Furd is so easy to root for because they're such underdogs and are kicking ass on the field and in the classroom, blah blah blah", etc.

Anyone know anyone else who's gone Benedict Arnold on us?

If I did, they would be dead to me so I would no longer know them, so the answer to your question would always be no.

But no one has become dead to me in this fashion.

Best friend in high school went to furd, dated a furd, but never crossed over. Can't come close to imagining that.

Police are still buying my story that the freshly turned earth in my yard was from armadillos digging. You can get away with that in Texas.

I root for Stanford until the Big Game...I so want Cal to ruin their season and trebuchet us over the top..

Kinda like how Texas and OK need each other to be undefeated going into October...eyes and recruits and hype helps the program...

I have heard of such things happening though I know of no one personally. Some years ago I was chatting with a young woman who's father was a loyal Cal alumn. She mentioned the father of a friend of hers who earned an undergraduate engineering degree in at Cal and then got an MBA from Furd. According to her, he then totally "forgot" about Cal and became a loyal Furdie, always introducing himself as a Furd alumni, wearing red and white, etc. etc.. I have met several Furd MBA's who never mention their undergraduate institutions, whatever they were, and seem overly eager to swath themselves in the Furdie mantle. It must be some kind of disease, a big money wannabe-itis that MBA grad students contract there. Charming.

I have a few co-workers and friends who know I am a Cal fan and pretend to be as well, but they only want to go to certain games and it could be because they like Cal's opponents better. I know this is the case with $C but I'm certain there are furdies as well.

What is really pathetic is that most people in the Santa Cruz area don't really identify with the bay area much. There are your Giants fans because they are champions, there are your 49er fans because they were good recently and there are your Golden State Warriors fans now for obvious reasons. IOWs, folks follow the winners, especially if they are local.

College team?
Folks here could care less really.
You do see alot of hats.
Furd hats
Cal hats
Oregon duck apparel

Plenty of pac-12 apparel in general.
Most don't even know what they are wearing.
Now old guys who wear Cal hats know what they are wearing. And they are fun to talk to about Cal.
The rest are oblivious.

Santa Cruz being liberal is a myth as well.
In many ways it is pretty conservative.
It is definitely hedonistic and, in that sense, much less intellectual than Berkeley.
That can be good or can be kind of dumbed down.

In general I'm very disappointed in Santa Cruz as a community but I'm glad to be away from Berkeley where everybody has to have an opinion about everything, even if they don't know what they are talking about.

Kinda like me

Just the opposite

Know a guy who was born in furd hospital, back when it was on Pacific Heights.
A furd fan until .......... he reached the age of reason ... then started his Cal journey

Well, if you went somewhere like Middlebury College or another college-sports-free-zone for your undergrad and then go to furd for your MBA, it's understandable to become a furd fan, especially since you probably went to games with your MBA buddies.

But if you went to Cal undergrad and then furd MBA? Oh hell no.

And if you went to Cal undergrad and then had nothing to do with furd (other than living near it), but became a furd fan? Oh hell no squared.

Well, there is the story of former Furd QB Randy Fasani's parents: Supposedly they are both Cal alums and both were Cal football season ticket holders... purportedly big fans.

When their kid was like a senior in HS he got injured and supposedly Furd had been recruiting him and they stayed with him despite the injury and his folks were seduced by this and he went there and they became big fans, to the point where they donned Furd gear at the Big Game.

I get rooting for another school, even Furd, if my kid went there -- certainly if he/she played there -- but when they played Cal, sorry, I'd still root for Cal (but root for the kid to have a great game).

When I met the father of my son's classmate (15 mos. ago), he saw I was wearing a Cal hat, asked he if I went to Cal, and told me he went to UC Davis.

Later I see him wearing Furd gear and I wondered if I had been hallucinating again. This year, he, his wife and kid are ALWAYS wearing Furd stuff and they go down to the Farm for all the games, so I googled him: Davis undergrad, Furd MBA. I think he's actually choosing Furd now as his "brand", believing it'll get him ahead, make contacts, etc.

Whatever.

How does this even happen? I'm not a Cal fan because I want to be (who would put themselves through the agony). I'm a Cal fan because I am a Cal alum. I have no choice. How can you suddenly change and root for the enemy unless Cal did something to you? And what on earth could Cal do to you to make you switch? If you do switch I'd think you were a front running little kid. That's what you do when you're a little kid. It's why my avatar picture is of Bob Gibson. I rooted for the Cardinals as a little kid because theywere the best. Now I root for the Giants because that is where I was born and raised. Same thing.

+1. I started this thread because I was wondering if anyone else thinks this is just as F'd up as I do.

Also, kudos to you. Because most people I know who change fan loyalties go from rooting from their hometown team to being fairweather fans (of the Yankees, Lakers, or some such).....I've never heard of anyone doing it in the reverse order, but that's admirable.

And kudos to chunkybear for canceling out the clowns I mentioned in my OP. You're doing it right, buddy.

I just don't know how you root for any team that you don't have some sort of connection to. I guess if you have no connections (eg. you were born in another country) then you get to pick a team to root for based on colors or swagger or owner or whatever. I really think it's pathetic to see adults rooting for teams just because they are the hot team.

Ugh, I hate bringing this up and everyone might hate me for it but here goes.

When I was 11 and not into college football at all, I went to the big game and I was rooting for Stanford because it was at Stanford and it was the only college I had visited.

My parents have a picture of 11 year old me in a Stanford hat on their refrigerator and it's been there for years . Every once in awhile a friend of mine will post it on my Facebook just to **** me off.

With that said, I hate Stanford and Go Bears.

Well, the only you can do is never speak to your parents again. It's a large price to pay but you have no choice. The Cal fan police will be by to check on you from time to time to make sure you're doing your duty.

I love how this thread has turned into a confessional for much less egregious offenses.

"I rooted for furd once when I was an 11-year-old and didn't know better". "I know someone who was born in furd hospital and rooted for furd for while." "Random people in Santa Cruz root for furd" (seriously, F Santa Cruz) "Randy Fasani's parents rooted for furd" (really? maybe their son being recruited for and playing for furd has something to do with it, no?"

Your transgressions pale compared to anyone who went to Cal and has turned into being a diehard furd fan because of their success and our recent travails.

YOU AND THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW ARE ALL FORGIVEN. That is all.
