I was hoping for Melbourne, so that I can find some way for work to send me there for a week or two (and I can catch this game live).
Cool! I just booked a private plane and an AirBnb mansion rental for the week.

I can almost hear the excuses already for the following 2-3 games. "Well we lost that week of practice back in August and the team is still adjusting to get back to pacific time...."
I just don't get what upside there was to this arrangement. Also Hawaii is half way to OZ already so somewhat makes sense for them.

NCAA has ruled that David Lonie is eligible for this game only.
I didn't realize that that was part of the deal. I thought we were adding a game...not replacing a game.
I believe this will be the college football game of the day.

I don't think so. Unless we go without a (midseason) bye week.
There are 14 weeks of college football after the Australia game.
-1 week for the bye after the game.
-1 week for the Pac-12 championship game.
=12 weeks to play the 11 remaining games.
New Zealand (All Blacks) vs Australia rugby the same day... unfortunately in New Zealand. That would have made for a sweeeeeeeeeet trip.

should help with recruiting this year, that's for sure. i hope it IS a home game. would be nice to return the favor by playing hawaii at their place.
Interesting. Really hope Sonny can use this as a recruiting tool. I imagine a free trip to Australia will be pretty attractive to recruits. I like that it's also moved the season up a week (Auguest 27th from September 3rd) to hopefully mitigate the school/ jet lag issues. I guess that means Fall camp will start earlier as well? A lot of logistics on this one.
Still sounds like an all around poor idea.

I can't imagine recruits being remotely impressed by this nonsense.
I wish we'd stop with the cute gimmicks and just invest on actually being good on the field.
I hope part of the deal was first class tickets for all athletes. I can't imagine football player sitting in coach for the time it takes to fly to Oz. Or maybe they can fly first class on an Emirate jumbo with a gym on the upper deck?

A Roo burger from Sydney.
The upside is that the players will enjoy the trip to Australia. The downside is that this takes a way a home game in September, albeit against an inferior opponent. September home games have great atmosphere with the nice weather and the reality of another failed season yet to sink in.

Yah, the basketball team hated it. Maybe some graduate players with one year of eligibility left might be enticed.
another positive is that there's a change this game may actually be on at a reasonable time on the west coast for a change!

Not more so than being good or winning big, I don't think. No one is committing to us because of where they'll play one game of their collegiate lives.

I keep forgetting - everything Cal sucks, right? So we shouldn't ever be excited about anything Cal football. EVER.
