Most of the complaining is coming from contrarian guys who wouldn't have even showed up to Cal vs South Dakota State, anyway.

That's a shame. Football games are sanctuaries for people to get away from the real world for a while, forget their troubles, relax, and have a good time. If you keep worrying about wins and losses, that just adds to the mental anguish. And that's something that California fans do not need. Just enjoy Cal football, and let the team take care of their issues.

I wonder how many of the posters in this thread complaining about losing a home game actually went to tonight's home game.

Plenty of us. Our AD is a jackass. Soon he will announce that all Cal home games will be played on the road so that Cal fans can no longer be bothered with actually attending games.

I'm way more interested in playing Hawaii in Australia than playing South Dakota State at home, especially if I go to Sydney. Even if I don't, the players will, and that's much more important.

When was a game like South Dakota State at home ever a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the players or fans?

Plenty? Since you went to the game, you know attendance was pathetic last night. I predict most complainers on this thread did not go to the game.

"Now the University of California are setting their sights on discovering Australia’s next Jarryd Hayne when a team of coaching staff and talent scouts arrive in Sydney next year.

Californian Golden Bears coach Sonny Dykes has revealed his ambition to not only put on a show when his college team plays the University of Hawaii next August at ANZ Stadium, but to rake the NRL, Super Rugby and AFL of any young athletic talent hoping to make the transition to the NFL.

When they touch down in Sydney next year, the University of California will target the best 17 to 22-year-old talent Australia has to offer."

So will this then be the very first college football game of the season? Imagine we'll get some good viewership (at least on the West Coast) for those jonesing for some college ball after the long off season.

I can almost hear the excuses already for the following 2-3 games. "Well we lost that week of practice back in August and the team is still adjusting to get back to pacific time...."

I just don't get what upside there was to this arrangement. Also Hawaii is half way to OZ already so somewhat makes sense for them.

Right on about the excuses. Regarding upside, it can only be the money. Otherwise, this just takes away one home game, thereby screwing the loyal season ticket holders, especially the ESP seat holders. Once again, the Cal athletic department shows its total disregard for its most loyal fans.

Yeah. Don't understand the disappointment over this. California gets to play a game overseas at a neutral site. For some of those players, it's the first time that they will be overseas. If this is a recruiting tool, it can't hurt you all.

The disappointment stems from the fact that this takes away one home game next season. That's a bummer for those of us who attend all home games.

Does anyone have an idea of when the team would leave California for the game? Classes start on August 24. With travel time and adjusting from jet lag after getting back, may not be the best way to start the semester academically. The hoops team traveled to Australia during the summer and played Australian teams. This is different.

Yeah, we lost out on that super attractive, fan-drawing matchup against powerhouse South Dakota State.

Massive blow for us.

Do we know who's covering this game (if anyone) in the US?

I'd assume ESPN would be all over this, or at least the Pac-12 network (AKA the media arm of the conference that so desperately wants to expand its brand across the Pacific Rim). But I could be wrong.

Also, at any other school, this would be a non-issue, but at Cal, where faculty have declared jihad against athletics, I'm hoping this won't turn what should be a good idea into a trainwreck.

Well, there are tons of Cal faculty that support athletics very strongly. Among those are the ones honored during breaks in the game as the "faculty member of the game". Personally, I'm tired of hearing my friends at Stanford refer to Cal as "Low APR U" and hope that Sonny keeps us on track building a program with solid academics AND solid performance on the field.

In all fairness, those people are my heroes. And should be all our heroes. They're taking a stand at a place where more people oppose them than would do so at most other schools.

If the much-maligned people who stage our home games are honoring them during breaks, maybe I shouldn't be so hard on them either. That's one thing they're doing right.

And the furdies like calling us "Low APR U" just as much as they like calling USC "Under Stanfurd Control". Bless their hearts. They're just jelly because we're going to Australia.

Playing this game is a great opportunity and reward for the team and Cal coaching staff. In a year after we will have graduated a lot of folks and still have a lot of underclassmen who have been through a lot in rebuilding the program in the classroom, on the field, and before the cameras during pre and post-game interviews, this offers a bowl-like setting in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I cashed in miles to make Sydney my first international trip back in 1998 and just loved it. How many 18-22 year olds have this opportunity? I was already over 30 when I went. Compared to ten hour flights to Europe the air fares I've seen to Sydney for late August seem reasonable for the distance. Or if you've been saving your miles for a big international trip, why not cash them in for a late summer vacation where you also get to see Cal play. Folks I know who are big into cycling events are now checking out what will be going on in New Zealand around that time as you can usually get a stop in Auckland included for about the same airfare as just going round-trip to Sydney. I understand there are a lot of rental flats with two and three bedrooms available so you can get a group together and get the benefits on a kitchen, etc. and bring down the cost compared to a hotel room.

So, I certainly wouldn't look at this like a trip just to see Cal play but a great reason to take a great vacation trip while also seeing Cal play. If you haven't been to Australia or New Zealand but it's on your list, here's a reason to finally go for it! And speaking of New Zealand, I would highly recommend at least going to the South Island for 4-5 days if you like diverse natural beauty.

And I'm certainly far more excited about this game on an international stage than wasting a holiday weekend, when one could otherwise have gone somewhere, to host South Dakota (no disrespect intended). I wouldn't think that game would have more fans in the stands than attended back in the Holmoe days. Seems like a lot of folks have a very narrow view and a very negative view of everything. I look at the upside experience of this. College is supposed to be about being exposed to the world. And this is a world-class opportunity from a world-class university. It's taken a lot to return this program to being competitive in a very competitive conference and this will offer the student-athletes an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives. I'm not thinking hosting South Dakota would be remembered quite that long.

9 PM? Fine, I'll record it and watch it he next morning. I guess it beats the days when we only had 11 games per season, or else we wouldn't have had an FCS team to drop for this.

And what about the old timers. Maybe Joe Starkey will travel ahead of time and will have adjusted, but I bet this will make Lee Grosscup retire from even the local bar show. They both complain about these night games all the time. Joe Starkey closed with "Good... Morning?" after the Wazzu game last year.

Wow, can't they start 2 hours earlier?

I thought the point of this game was also to showcase us nationally, in the United States.

But that's not possible with a game starting after midnight East Coast time.

Anyways, that would place us at 6 late-night (East Coast) games in a row, assuming we get the Cactus Bowl.

--Oregon 7:30 PT start
--Oregon State 7:30 PT start
--Stanford 7:30 PT start
--Arizona State 7 PT start
--Cactus Bowl 7:15 PT start

So, this game will take place at 11am Saturday in Sydney, which is a Friday night game in the good ol' USA (if I did my math right, that's a 6pm PDT/9pm EDT kickoff... the standard ESPN/FS1 friday night game start). Please tell me that it will be on a Fox or ESPN station and not the p12 network. If it does get picked up by the networks, it could count as our once ever so often home weekday game, meaning we don't have to play a home weekday game later in the season.

where did you get the 11 a.m. Sydney start time info? My earlier posts showed 2 p.m. Sat Sydney time which equates to 9 p.m. Pacific time Fri.
