Looked quite empty on tv. Saw a 5-win Nebraska againat Iowa and seemed to be a sellout. Same for quite a few other teams in the conference.

Problem is we don't have the tradition and fan support to even think we can fire a coach after winning 7 games. Even the opener was not a sellout. We ain't Bama. Heck we are not even Stanford at this point.

A little trivia: Cal leads the Pac-12 for highest road attendance and is the only school to average more than 60K. Colorado is last at 36K and Furd is next to last at 44K.

(And yes, playing UT helped)

Night games are awful. Younger alums have plans sat nights and older alums I'm assuming don't want to get home so late. Plus it's cold at night. And we got screwed with multiple night games this season.

Need more Bay Area natives at Cal. Really simple. Plenty of smart kids from here that can't get a chance. There is a reason why Stanford attendance is so poor. Cal is headed towards that direction.

From attending 2-3 games per year, its not the night game issue. We played WSU on a Sat afternoon and there were thousands literally thousands of empty seats. Yes we sellout when we play UCLA/STANFORD at home because they also have thousands of fans in attendance.

Road attendance? This is about home attendance.

Many decades ago, Cal football was followed closely, and attended by, those in the local community. Granted, the local community members then often had a friend, neighbor or relative who was a Cal student, graduate or employee. The Great White Flight of the sixties and seventies ended that. The base moved over the hill(s), making getting to the games quite bit more difficult for them. Let's just say that there has been little interest by the Cal community in attracting those others who now make up the greater part of the population surrounding Berkeley, in the Inner East Bay.

Maybe it's time to reach out to the townies to fill the stands? Either that, or enjoy the sparse crowds.

Given all that, and after the awful loss to furd, many probably stayed home to watch on TV, prepared to turn it off, and some probably did after the first half. Competition with so much to do on a Saturday night in the Bay Area has to be a factor.

I know that...just thought it was an interesting factoid.

The Pac-12 hasn't updated their website but going into last night, Cal was sitting at 49,482 per home game. Furd was 49,666. Conference average was 51K with USC leading the way at 74K and Wazzu last at 29K.

On the coldest night I can remember at Memorial, the true Cal fans, all forty thousand strong, saw a truly entertaining and memorable game. Everything about the game day experience was just right last night. No more negabears, and on to whatever bowl game is lucky enough to take us. Go Bears.

Not to mention the great views of the field available from the empty student section on the 50. It was curious how may fans stayed in their end zone seats, especially the corners, when everyone was invited by the insufferable announcer to move to the better seats.

Being season tix holders in SoCal, (have been for many years), and an older couple, the wife and I get burned out on the I5 drive or SWA flights, and usually miss one home game each season. Having gone to the OSU, then Big Game last weekend we decided last night would be the game to stay home. We had also gone to the Texas and UCLA games so we didn't feel too guilty.
My ass is sore from me kicking it all night. Not a mean feat. While watching on TV was Ok, WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT MEM. If only I had 20/20 foresight...

More hustling by our marketing people would help a little, but winning is the only real cure. Exhibit A below.

You know what would help attendance: getting to watch an opposing coach like Graham every home game. THE GUY IS A RAGING LUNATIC. Arms flailing, constantly screaming at his defensive players, gyrating well out on the field making the defensive calls. We finally figured out what he must have been screaming to his players after any successful Cal play against his defense: "IT'S CAL!!!! WTF!!!" :-)

Last night it was f**ing freezing. I don't know about midwest schools but my soft, bay-area ass basically froze on the aluminum benches. Every time the hot chocolate guy showed up in our section he only got about 10 rows up before selling out. Given the weather, vs. ASU & late start I thought the crowd size was reasonable.

It was cold, but pleasant if you dress like you're going skiing - I was comfortable, but was geared up with my stocking cap, gloves, capilene wear. It was great! I grew up going to cold games late in the season, I actually look forward to nights like last night - that's football weather! And what a game...

It was cold but it wasn't unmanageable or crazy. Only mistake I made was nothing to cover my ears. Hoodie under the down jacket would have worked well. Next time I'll consider a blanket or ultralight sleeping bag.

Frigid! Frigid! Frigid! As I reflect on two 80+ year olds preparing to sit through the cold, discouraged at the half though no thoughts of leaving, there is nothing guite like the satisfaction of a gutsy win the likes of which we observed. Add the joy of the team celebration, departing CMS with a joyous crowdTV doesn't capture this feeling. Sadly, TV makes it easy to make excuses not to attend. Happy to see so many loyal fans braving the coldest night in memory, and the warmest win! Well done Golden Bears.

It would have been a bigger crowd if 40,000 showed up. I estimate that there was, at most, 28,000 at Cal Memorial last night vs. ASU.

You could have taken everyone sitting in Sections N through QQ and put them in the empty seats in Section MM and about 1/2 of Section N. Approx. 1,900 people.

Similarly, you could have taken everyone in Sections II through LL and filled up Section M and Section LL. Approx. 2,600 people.

ESP and Benchback sections were about half full, at best. But let's assume a generous 2/3rds full. Approx. 5,200 people.

Sections T and TT would have filled out the empty seats in the student section (approx. 6,700 people), and folks in Section U through XX would have filled out Section A and half of Section XX. Approx. 2,600 people.

Finally, Sections B through E were populated enough to fill Section AA and half of B. Approx. 2,600 people.

My unofficial best estimate is 21,600 people. I'll stipulate that number may be under-estimated by as much as 25% because people were spread out so much in spite of the large numbers of open rows. That brings it up to 28,000 people.

The weather and the kickoff time depressed attendance. The fact, that Cal 's second half of the season has been charitably described as rocky also played into the lack of attendance as well as the game being played on Thanksgiving Weekend. Many people who might have attended (including students) were out of town for the holiday weekend.

Watching the game in Nebraska Friday and waking up to the game at Michigan and the game in Salt Lake City, I enjoyed throwing on all the multiple layers and actually using my Cal blanket for warmth and not just as a seat cushion. It felt like a good ole Midwest football game. Since it was cold outside, the Faculty Club was packed inside and it was rather warm and toasty. Enjoyed watching the Notre Dame game while eating a pre-game meal. The Sproul rally at night was cool and walking up to Memorial at night is a nice experience. Had a blast!!

About the ASU coach, in the AZ newspapers he claimed that they knew what play we were going to run so he was probably screaming the play out. He claimed that due to injuries his backfield was being played by younger players who couldn't stop our plays even knowing them. That would drive a coach crazy.

bigcocoon, why did you watch the game on tv instead of attending the senior send off at memorial stadium?

doesn't change start from within ourselves & our actions (or lack of actions)?

I came down from Sacramento and it took over 2 1/2 hours for the drive. However, it was worth it! :gobears:

I was not surprised it was a low attended game though. Th wind was brutal! My section was mostly kids (students and ASU fans).

That's become a huge problem, and not just for the football and men's basketball programs.

I was there in the ESP section, and I agree with you. I estimate that there were 25,000 people in attendance. It was really cold last night, and I think that fact and the other issues you mentioned contributed to the poor attendance.

Nebraska is perpetually sold out. Team loyalty is a whole different concept here. The closest team to which I could compare Nebraska in terms of fan zealotry is the Green Bay Packers. Hosting Husker parties at one's house is a big social tradition here, and sports bars do brisk business. Having said that -- they fired Frank Solich and Bo Pelini for only winning 9 games per year. Every indication is that Mike Riley will remain for 2016, but if next year is 5-7, it wouldn't shock me if both AD Shawn Eichhorst and Riley were gone.

Could somebody review the economics of night vs day games in November? I can't believe 20k fans staying home is less valuable than the added tv revenue. Vendors, parking, whatever all take it in the shorts so the university can pocket tv cash....while alienating the fan base.

I'd be curious too. Cold November night + late start + holiday weekend + travel time for some (I don't get home til 1:00am or later) = a high probability of a low turnout. Just the late start alone probably eliminated 10-15K from attendance. Sure doesn't help the local businesses.

Can't compare this game to a game in Nebraska or the SEC though. In Nebraska, what else are you gonna do when football is the only game in town? You're talking a religion in the SEC. Way too many other things going on in the Bay Area on a Saturday night, including the Warriors and Sharks both playing on that particular night.

Totally agree. Plenty of season ticket holders around me did not show up. Why...because it was sooooo late at night. They told me after the OSU game they could not make a night game that started so late at night.

I will just throw this out there...for whatever the reasons, the almost entirely empty ESP section in the second half of a great game is a horrible look. I was embarrassed. And yes, my wife and I sat in our endzone seats the entire game. Even passed up the 'Move of the Game' tickets we were offered an hour before the game. I don't get going to a game (and I see this everywhere, not just Cal football) and then sitting somewhere enclosed watching a screen or even looking through glass. Just host a part at home if you are going to do that.
