Trying for some measured view of things:

1. Driving home from game Pawlowski said this was his favorite team in terms of 'family' togetherness, heart, etc. That is worth a good deal.

2. The post game celebration also says a lot.

3. ASU is a pretty good team; terrific in the 1st half, but should its coach be lambasted for the 2d half? Complicated game made more so by emotion, inner drive and a million other items.

4. 7-5 with admittedly modest talent, improved academics, and of equal importance what appears to be a group of student/players who are decent, team-oriented, has significant value.

Are the above as important as wins over 'better' teams? For me they come damn close.

5. Should it be better? The facile answer is yes; but that is the beginning not the end of the discussion.

6. There is much argument on this board about speaking one's mind and yes of course one can say anything, but loudly and boldly asserting something and that assertion being true are quite different matters.

Couple of examples:

- too often on this board we read statements that appear to be gospel"no heart on this team.D can't coach" etc. etc. While these observations may be true, as w/most activities in life, especially those w/some complications, most of us who are not doing it, have little idea of those complexities. Practicing law, teaching, making financial determinations, being a cop, coaching are all pretty intense and layered activities.

- another example: D is not recruiting well enough. Now that may be due to his failures as a recruiter or it may have everything to do with recruiting for a team that was 1-11 2 years ago and is described by many here as only a 'so-so' 7-5 team. Merely saying he should be a better recruiter and should be getting 4 and 5 star players does not make it so.

7. The anger and impatience here does not reflect one's best qualities.

Paws also compared this team's trajectory to his team's progression through the first years of Bruce Snyder; from 3-8, a couple of years of 4-5 wins, and ultimately the '91 bear team that was arguably the best Cal team in the last 50 years.

I really respect Mike P., and his unabashed support for SD carries a lot of weight in my eyes.

Having spoken to Mike several times away from his official duties, he has the same frustrations that any of us do about not getting over the hump against the tougher teams, etc, but he genuinely believes in the progress that's been made. He's not anybody's shill just because he comes off as positive about the team, though people are certainly entitled to disagree with any of his takes. Personally, I think he does a great job.

Schedule this year was very difficult. Before the season began and everyone was throwing out their over/under for wins, I was willing to take seven as a sign of improvement. They are clearly improved. Possibly, much improved.

However, the pessimist in me says they were a lot closer to four wins. ASU, Wazzu and UT were very close to being losses with none of the five losses being ones somebody could argue were "winnable."

In my opinion, the SC game was quite winnable.

We beat every team where we were favored

We lost to every team where we were dogs

We took care of business of what was in front of us, but lost to teams that are 10-2, 9-3, 9-3, 8-4 and 8-4.

It is what it is.

SC has a lot of tools in the box and Kessler ain't bad when given protection. They also seem to be riding an emotional wave right now. Unless McCaffrey has a game for the ages, I like SC's chances at Levi's.

Love Pawlaski. His evaluation of the program is very insightful if a bit cheerleaderish. Nevertheless, he's been great to the program and CAL for decades. Not bad for a guy who was once considered the worst recruit in the Pac10

So if SC wins at Levi they obviously kill furds slim playoff hopes, but do they also steal the Rose Bowl berth?

Some of you may know this, but Mike and I were roommates back in the 90 - 91 years. Mike is one of the great people who has come into my life. We had a great talk after the game last night (he was talking with a players dad on the phone before we did). You'll learn a lot listening to Mike. He's one of the great personifications of cal.

Likewise, I thought (and still think) every game against the other California schools are winnable...but maybe I'm just psycho.

Yes, maybe the team is on an upward trajectory of sorts, but I can't help but feel that the true barometer of success is beating one, two or all three in-state rivals...or at least make them scared to death of an upset when facing Cal.

besides the close wins, this was the weakest PAC team in at least 5 years. the fact that we improved our total wins from last year means little with respect to our seniority, experience, and opponents.

I have one Pawlawski story. At the Copper Bowl in 1990 my wife and I stayed at the same hotel as the team (Westin La Paloma). The day before the game we were practicing on the driving range when along comes Mike with about 7 or 8 very large kids in tow (probably his offensive line). He was instructing them on various points of the game of golf. He commanded their attention like he was their father or professor. When they left the practice area he led the way and they all followed behind him. I looked at my wife and said, "Now that guy is a leader." The next day on New Year's Eve he led the Bears to victory against Wyoming.
On a side note, whenever he threw a pick or the other team recovered a fumble and tried to advance the ball I loved the way Mike threw caution to the wind and made tackles like a linebacker. I was and remain very impressed by him.

Didn't Pawlawski once get a "roughing the linebacker" penalty or something after he got sacked? Or am I imagining things?

No, you're not imagining. I distinctly remember that happening too, though the details of the event is now foggy.
