Coach Helton deserves the job; however, he has yet to prove he has the flash to be long term HC at $uSC. Congratulations to Coach Helton.

Smart move and relatively low risk. Lower salary, and worst case, easy to can the guy in a year or two when he was promoted from within vs. a hand picked candidate after months of interviews.

For reference, Cal players campaigned for Bozeman's hire. Not usually a wise move to let the players choose the coach.

But I think a lot of players wanted Steve Mariucci and we got Gilbertson instead. Sometimes they are right.

From ESPN: "Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Trojans wanted to interview Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson for the job but the timing couldn't be worked out during the NFL season. The sources also said that Schiano was a finalist for the job."

Has there ever been a more overrated coach than Schiano?

Man, too bad Schiano didn't get the job. Could you imagine him and U$C on The Drive? Mr. Hardass Jerseyboy meets Biff, Buffy and the Snoop Dog hangers. It would have been gold, GOLD I TELL YOU!!! GOLD!

I have an idea for a sitcom: due to an administrative fiasco, Schiano and Hue Jackson are both told they got the USC job. They show up the first day of "training camp" and hijinks ensue.

Their two gold crosses get entangled and they are forced to trade Jersey and urban trash talk in close quarters

He may not be the best choice but I salute them for rewarding a loyal guy who at least has the players on his side. If he's successful, I'll probably regret this hiring because he's relatively young and could be there a long time.

Third episode: Tensions escalate, Hue recruits Snoop and LBC gang bangers while Schiano has to drive madly to Vegas to get some bona fide Jersey mobsters. In true happy Hollywood schlock endings...they have a flag football game, ending with paramedics dislodging a cleat from a large person's rectum.

Of course, if it's a sitcom, you'd need every ep to end with some beloved Trojan Family grandfather-type (John Robinson?) delivering some corny homespun wisdom, after which everyone has a group hug and goes to McDonald's together.

Considering how Helton turned around this team, Sark will never get another coaching job.

Yes. Who would have thought that the best head coach available in the country was an assistant on his current staff. What a coincidence. It looks like a lazy, safe hire right now which means they'll continue to beat us and win 8-9 games a year until they figure out a really good coach can get them to the NC game.

Helton is definitely not the kind of coach that would get drunk and fired midseason so at least they'll be stuck with him for a solid 3 years.

Turned around the team? He's likely to go 5-3. Those 5 wins include a 3 point win against Colorado (yes, THREE), a 6 point win against Cal and an 8 point win against Arizona. Maybe that's why most SC fans are pissed right now.

Every episode should include scenes of a game (aka Friday Night Lights) with glimpses of a fat old man in jail, watching what once was his glory, and the sounds of cell doors clanging shut, and a glimpse of a tall guy ballroom dancing, alone in a dim room, watching the game.
Heisman moments.

well, we have a better chance of a 2nd half moral victory with a lesser coach at the helm.
