A few others have pointed out a desire to define an identity for the football team.

Here is my first attempt:
Like the symbol of our University (our shining Campanile), Cal and Cal football is a beacon of light in a increasingly jaded and dark world.

We believe in fair play and playing by the rules.
We believe in the idea of true student athletes that excel in the field and in the classroom.
We believe in being informed and grounded by traditions but not bound by them. The values behind the traditions are what is important, not the traditions themselves.
We believe in a culture where players excel based on their ideas of who they are as individuals and who they are as a team rather than out of fear of the repercussions for failure.
We believe in sustainable, long term success and we place no limit to the level of success provided that it is achieved in harmony with our vision for who we are. We are not opposed to quick results but are unwilling to sacrifice or compromise who we are or our long term sustainable success to achieve quick results.

We are Cal Football. We are Cal.

Every person who chooses to apply their focus to
what this organization is doing and achieving has a role to play. When we succeed, we succeed together. We we fail, we fail and learn together.

This is men's American football we're talking about here?

Yes. Should I rephrase the principles to make them more American or more masculine?

Attempt at humor over your poetic effort to charter our football mission. Others have been more terse like "just win baby." Yours is just as memorable and worthy my apologies

No worries. I'm not good at detecting humorous intentions on the Internet.

Thanks for taking the time to clarify your response and bumping my attempt to redirect attention away from speculation about Coach Dyke's extension negotiation soap opera.

Man that should be on a bronze plaque at Memorial stadium
That way visiting teams will die laughing before they hit the field.

It seems like evanluck has really good intentions. But after 10 minutes, I still can't stop laughing at your post. It's been a tough few days.

That would be just as hilarious as our neighbors' mission statement.

I like it except for "We believe in a culture where players excel based on their ideas of who they are as individuals." Sounds too PC to me.

There are two main motivations that a player could adopt to pursue excellent.

1. He believes he can be great
2. He fears the consequences of failure

The first is what we should encourage. I see teams where punishment and fear are used to motivate players to execute. This is tempting because it usually produces fast results. The othe way produces more lasting excellence.

When Harbaugh was at Stanfurd, I remember him saying that "we showed the world who we are." This was after they beat U$C 55 to 21.
