Shouldn't it be everyone's goal to do everything possible for his success? I think 3 years as HC of a major Power 5 program is enough of a sample size to determine that there are some weaknesses in Sonny's game that need to be corrected....some of them admittedly so. If Sonny is expected to demand improvement of his players, shouldn't he seek self improvement in his coaching skills as well?
I would hope that with any extension signed, as well as whatever performance evaluation that is conducted, the AD is emphatic about specific areas on the field that are in need of improvement. For example, I think it's evident to even a casual fan, that Sonny's game management skills are less than impressive. I would propose that there be some sort of mentor program established from a fraternity of distinguished former and retired coaches to help him improve those skills. An informal collection of "grey beards" could provide a lot of advice and wisdom regarding clock management, situational football, play calling, etc that could be invaluable. This is a technique that the military has long used to improve senior officer leadership. Guys like Levy, White, and Mooch, as well as others like Madden could probably really help Sonny elevate his game!
