I have a suggestion for our AD that would end this contract drama/bullsh*t: Mike make Sonny, a two part, good faith offer WITH a short time deadline. If he accepts everybody make nice in the media and move forward. If he rejects then the second part of the offer kicks in: Sonny doesn't have to pay the buyout and CAL does not pay the rest of his contract! This has drawn out way too long, its time for the AD to play hardball! I'm not a Sonny hater but I want the young men who play for CAL to have a coach AND AD who are "all in" for CAL!

I can appreciate your frustration with the situation. However, I don't think the AD can just unilaterally decide to force changes and not pay the rest of the contract.

Yes, it is frustrating, but negotiation is often a matter of who blinks first. For all we know, the parties are close on certain issues and apart on others that are minor. This could be resolved quickly now that Sonny was not chosen by the other schools and we know our bowl destination. He now must return to coaching and resolve the situation to avoid distractions. Williams doesn't want to be hung out to dry either. It makes sense that resolution isn't too far off.

Williams: "Hey friend, maybe stop looking at the classifieds and let's beat Air Force, huh?"

Sonny is damaged goods. He wants out. You can't play football for a guy you absolutely, positively know doesn't really want to be there. How can he give any motivational talks about playing for the team when he doesn't want to be a part of the team? Football is different than most sports. You can't put your body and future health at risk knowing that some of your teammates aren't all in. And your head coach is also a teammate. I hope our AD is working on a way to get rid of Sonny and get someone else in. There is no other way. You can't find out that your wife is on Tinder and take her back. At least I couldn't.

Exactly.
He and Sonny can agree to mutually acceptable changes to the contract or he can insist that Sonny perform the contract as written.
If Sonny wants to refuse to do so Sonny can decide to terminate the contract and make the termination payment.
But Williams cannot unilaterally revise the contract.

My concern is that Sonny will perform on the contract; improve Cal's academic and on-field performance then like Snyder go to another school and take that school to the BCS bowls.

Many posters do not agree with my assessment of Sonny. But IMO he has exceeded my expectations academically and on the field he is about where I thought he would be by the end of his third year (maybe one fewer win) with all the academic problems Sonny was faced with at his start.

But then I based my expectations on Cal's past on-field performances. In view of Cal's track record 7-5 or 8-4 are very respectable targets for the third year of Sonny's tenure. I would expect improvement by year 5 and 6. I do not expect miracles of the new coach (especially not from a coach who is the lowest paid in the PAC 12). If we really expect miracles Cal should PAY to get a coach that can do miracles; anyone in the market to cough up $4.0 to 5.0 MM per year?
