Per the Mercury-News from ESPN, it's a two-year extension, through 2019. The key issue for me is the buyout. Can we get rid of Sonny without a huge financial hit if things go south next year. Obviously, if the upward trend continues, he might get something longer term for more money. In the current coaching environment, that can't be helped. The key is whether they can continue the momentum without Goff at QB.

I think with TFS there will always be offense. And with tempo and good running game (Watson, Muhammed, Enwere, Coprich, Powell), it could be a decent one if our line holds together. The key is whether we continue to improve on defense.

The key issue for me is assistant pay. I really like our OC & DC. I don't know much about the position coaches; but I take David Shaw's word for it (which corresponds to my impression from everything else I've seen and heard) that, despite the ugliness of the initial struggles, Sonny really does know how to put together a superior program; and I take the personal words of Sonny, Franklin and Kaufman, that they not only get the odd nexus that is this football program in this place, but that they really like the idea of making it all work --- like we feel on this Board.

So... two more years for three star Sonny, huh?

Does the buyout work both ways? Is the buyout number the same if we terminate his contract early or if another team wants to hire him away from us?

If it is too low, wouldn't that make it easier for another team to steal him away if he continues to improve?

Yes, it probably is the same both ways. That's the chance you take. But I agree with Dr. White, that in the wake of the Tedford buyout, we can't afford to give someone a contract with a big buyout, without more evidence that they can take the program to the top half of the conference long term. We're not Alabama or Notre Dame. We just can't afford to paper over hiring errors with wads of cash. If Sonny has a good year next year, it will be a whole new ballgame in terms of contract renegotiation, and we should be prepared to make a bigger commitment. If we are, I'm not convinced that Sonny is going to leave just for spite.
