This is good news both for the football program and for BI (which can now recover some of its collective sanity).

Higher than I expected. The key, however, is the buyout. How difficult will it be to get out of this if Sonny crashes next year.

Oh excellent, higher number than I thought and still reasonable. How much was the assistant pool before? Maybe TF interviewing is to get some leverage from Sonny on getting some of that pie

Cal assistants currently earn $1.993m.

This appears to be a good bump, but keep in mind, I think we were missing 1 coach?

Per the other thread link the assistant pool is up ~$500k from ~$2.5M buy still ~$1M behind published leader Ucla.

How much will it cost us in real terms if we fire him 1) at the end of 2016, or 2) at the end of 2017?

Reasonable....I was thinking around $2.5M-$2.6M for Sonny, with a substantial bump in assistant salary pool. Looks like that's the case, but to Jeff82's point...what does the buyout look like?

Divided by, say, 10 that's $50 k per coach. Not bad at all for this year. I say 10 because I don't know how it would be split among coaches, staff, Grad assistants etc.

You're exactly right regarding higher than expected and the buyout. Cal has to be the only school that would give a 40% raise and a 2-year extension to a coach who delivered a 13-23 record in his first three years, has not won a single game against the top 4 teams in the conference, and who nobody else wants. And we wonder why attendance at our home games is so poor and our athletic department has financial difficulties.

Wow, up there with KW of Utah, above actually...

Higher pay, higher standard too. The out will be critical indeed...

What has SD been complaining about? That's an excellent offer for him.

I'd say the number is too high for Sonny, until he can show better result on the field, which isn't likely to happen next couple years with Goff gone.

The assistants pool needs to be higher in my opinion.

We would have been better off paying Sonny 2.5 and moving the remaining $350k to the assistant pool. Sonny's agent got him an incredible deal .... let's hope his downfall isn't what got Tedford.... the inability to recruit and retain top assistants.

I too don't mind a healthy bump in the assistant pool, including the OC and DC, for desirable coaches. Just to fork-over more money to the current staff, no...

Not sure how to reconcile what we were spending (1.9M or 2.2M vs what our pool was reported at (2.5M). But for a 500k increase, the way I see it Art and Tony will share about 200k, the next two share about 100k and that leaves $200k for a new position or bringing in a new guy at the low end and bumping the rest up one notch.

Well, the ice cream would be a reward, but depending on the kid, a dinner at Chez Panisse (and the required staying still in a chair sans electronic devices) might be construed as punishment. ;-)

Seriously, regardless of how I feel about this whole episode, I'm glad we are finally moving past it and can hopefully start focusing on the bowl, further team development, and '16 recruiting.

For what he has accomplished in the past, Kyle Whittingham is criminally underpaid at $2.6 million. Dykes on the other hand just got a 40% pay increase.

Too high for Dykes but happy to hear about the increase in the assistant pool so overall it's a positive.

No real way to know for sure, but I thought there were several reports of a 4-year, $11M offer on the table at the start of this process several weeks back. $2.85M "average" for 4 years comes to $11.4M, so it doesn't seem that much changed from what was originally put on the table - maybe a few tweaks here and there.

Of course, this is relying on the substantiated and proven sources of information from various correspondents and social media types. I'm certain that all of the previous information was validated and vetted through the appropriate procedures before tweeting it out into the ether ...

Ditto. Though really, Dykes' salary is not the issue so much as the buyout. I wonder what the terms are there.

The salary may also be reasonable if you adjust for Bay Area cost of living vs. other Pac-12 locations.

Your negative stance ignores the win trajectory, academic improvement from the students, achievement of coaching metrics established by the athletic department, the skills/experience/health of the team in year one of Sonny's Cal stint, a decidedly more positive opinion of him from other institutions, and the extremely low pay that he and the assistants were getting relative to both other conference coaches and the cost of living in the Bay Area. Other than that, it's a great analysis. /sarcasm

This is good! Considerably higher than what I'd been hearing and a well-deserved yet fair bump. Very happy about assistant pay. I'm sure the details will come out soon - I feel good about this.
