Article was linked from si.com. I root for Cal and the 49ers and I actually hope this happens. I know people think the 49ers are a terrible organization, but I don't think their overall talent level going into next year will be all that terrible. The coaches won't ruin him, he's too mentally tough, and they'll be gone soon anyways. And honestly, no matter what the situation is, how can I not root for my favorite player on my favorite college team to go to my favorite pro team?

I think the Browns will take him and will probably draft before the Niners. If Baalke really wants him he will have to trade up for him which means they will give up a ton of picks for him so he will be running for his life behind the horrible line (since we would probably have to give up middle round picks as well). Baalke's picks the past few years have been terrible and his OL assessments (based on trades) have not ben good. We will probably also lose Boldin and if Hyde can't recover then he will have a mediocre group of receivers to throw to (including a TE that can't catch anything) and no run game. I'd rather have him in a Rodgers type situation where he can learn for a few years before taking the starting spot.

If the 9ers or a similar team gets him, people can only hope that Jared's agent, or a private insurance broker, can get him a lucrative injury policy.

If Jared Goff is drafted by the 49ers, his career will be shortened by as much as 10 years.

I have absolutely no confidence in the 49ers to assemble and keep the personnel necessary for a good offensive line on the roster. Or to put it another way, the 49ers will assemble an offensive line that resembles wet toilet paper and like Alex Smith when he was with the 49ers, he'll be running for his life if he isn't being smashed into the turf.

F&^K Jed York. As long as York runs the 49ers, they will be crap. He got lucky when Harbaugh was running the show.

Garrett Celek has been very solid and Blake Bell has really surprised.

Obviously you are talking about Stone Hands McDonald. I know they love his blocking, but he is just too poor a pass catcher to trust at this level.

The 49ers offensive depth chart is as untalented as I have ever seen. They need to find three OL on the roster (the left side and then IDK who) and sign two NFL-quality starters for the right side, then draft for depth. If they do something approximating that, SF may jump up to a league average team in short order. But the OL must be fixed, it is a sieve, and we cannot properly evaluate QB play with that sort of protection.

SF has 11 draft picks for the NFL draft last I checked. They need a #1 WR, a #1 QB, a long-term solution at LT, replacements for RG and RT, and #1 RB who can stay on the field. And that is just on offense, and ignores the paucity of depth present on the roster.

I'm not a 49er fan but I think it would be great for Cal to have Goff stay local so I'm all for it. There are far worse NFL fates than the 49ers, and I'm not so sure they won't magically have a strong rebound after their Super Bowl hosting season has passed. Will be interesting to see.

Best thing that could happen to the Niners would be to trade Baalke. :p

I hate to admit it. But I totally agree. Much as I would like to see Goff in the Bay Area. It would not be in his best interests.

On the list of needs you forgot the biggest needs: 1. A new owner. 2. A new coach.

So, you're saying you don't want Goff going to the Browns, either? Neither do I.

Frankly, I'd like to see Goff go somewhere he can be integrated into the offense in due time, not have the weight of the offense riding on his shoulders as a rookie.

The 49ers are just a few years removed from a super bowl. Although the last two years have been somewhat of a disaster I don't think they're that far away from competing. They obviously have to address some needs at QB, OL and DB but in no way do I think Goff to SF is a death sentence. Most teams picking in the top 10 have similar issues... That's why they're drafting in the top 10.

The funny thing about McDonald is he was actually starting to catch the ball before last week's disaster. I agree with your assessments of Celek and Bell. But I don't think the OL is quite as bad as you do. Kaepernick and Gabbert have been to blame on a fair number of those sacks, and neither has Goff's ability to feel pressure and move around in the pocket (even though both are better runners). Staley's 31 and just made another Pro Bowl. I think Kilgore is a solid center. Anthony Davis may come back. Martin might be fine at guard. The WR's are pretty bad, but Patton has finally started to come on as a WR3. Hyde may be injury-prone, but he looked like a top 10 RB when he was in there. And on defense I like (to varying degrees) Lynch, Acker, Brock, Tartt, Reid, Bethea, Bowman, Williams, Dial, Purcell, Armstead. The roster has holes, but I don't think the cupboard is bare.

I root for all the Bay Area pro teams, but the Niners are my primary NFL team. However, I love the ridiculousness of the Coliseum, and the baseball diamond at Raider games kind of symbolizes that for me, so I decided to make them a new logo with it. Then I thought adding the logo to my BI profile would give it a little flair.

So would I, but that's not going to happen if he is one of the top two QB's drafted. The only way he goes to a decent team is if such a team trades up by giving up a front-line player plus multiple draft choices.

Fix other problems first and then pick up a QB.
LOL that a sports media outlet can 100% predict where a draft pick goes.

Incidently, Goff's draft status will change quite a bit between now and draft day.
It will change after the bowl season.
It will change again as free agent signings occur, especially those involving QBs and teams with top draft picks.
It will change as the NFL season comes to a close and the final draft order is established.
It will change during the NFL combine and at other NFL workouts.
It will change again as more free agent signings occur.
Then it will change on draft day as trades occur on day 1.

Given all of that, Goff could go anywhere from #1 overall to #60 overall.
I doubt he goes lower than early in the second round, but you never know.

So it seems strange to speculate about the 49ers and Goff at this point.
But if Goff goes to the Browns and Manziel becomes available, he could be a good option for the 49ers.
He can run and he will be a media distraction from the trainwreck that is the 49ers currently. He might even sell tickets and fill seats.

The 49ers have a history of shitting on Cal players, almost always drafting comparable players from else where.

I've always thought it should have been Matt Bouza who received The Catch.

Still a myth. Jeremy Newberry, Andre Carter. Iheanyi Uwaezuoke, Doub Brien, Steve Hendrickson, Steve Rivera, etc. beg to differ. Something not brought up is that while the Niners passed on Aaron Rodgers in the 1st round, so did a lot of teams including the Raiders I think at the 23rd spot.

Nope. JG is going to be drafted by Jerry jones to learn from Romo. Perfect opportunity to be a one year backup for an injury prone QB...with Dez and that O-line!
