I went in that building last spring and it was distressing how dirty, dingy and cruddy it looked. My wife said, "time to hit up the Hearst family" though I don't even know what that means these days

That's unfortunate. I remember taking a class or two in the building way back in the day and it was in so so shape then. I hope they come up with the funding.

That building is Cal's own version of Michigan Central Station (LINK)

Took a final there in Spring '73. During test I rested my copy of Dead's Europe '72 which I had just purchased, against the wall. Weird, but it is my only memory of being inside the place and the album is glued to the memory.

My final final was there. I didn't do so well. But it really didn't matter.

It's a beautiful place, but that final final left a bad taste in my mouth.

On the other hand, I had a final in the (revamped) Hearst Mining Building. It was beautiful. I got an A.

Hmm, never considered a possible correlation between my performance on a final and the ambiance of where I took it. Unfortunately too many of the data points are lost in the recesses of my mind.

I remember playing some intramural hoops games at Hearst. Kind of quaint, nice details but yeah it was rough around the edges in the 80s.

BTW, use to be able to catch a few topless sunbathers on the pool deck...but never really got a good look.

Spent a cold winter taking advanced lifesaving in the pool there my frosh year at Cal. Think it was an 8 am class and the pool wasn't especially warm.

Took ballroom dancing, not kidding, in Hearst. 1955 for PE.

Id love to see it built out. Did you ever see the original that was made by the Hearsts? That gym represents like 10% of what the Hearsts were going to build but the crash happened n they stopped after the gym was done.

That building is a beautiful burden. For all of our constant construction, and it's truly never ending, dropping 150 million on a non-revenue generating rec center is a tough pill to swallow. Especially when most of it will go towards restoration.

In contrast, Wheeler Hall (also super old & historic) will close shop for a year for a full restoration.

Mens and women's club vb use it daily. 3 teams....for practice. And we have great club vb teams!!!
350 club mvb teams nationwide and Cal has 6 club National Titles.
www.calclubvball.com
Were Cal to ever ad MVB as NCAA sport Cal would be great! A number of vb alums would kick in $$.

When one comes to watch practice, which I do a lot, you do have to pay attention where the ball is! If you don't want to get conked in the head.
The small size of gyms 220, 238, etc puts you RIGHT in the game there.
On some occasions when RSF Blue/Gold gyms are not available, the club teams even have had matches in there.

I remember back in the day when Hearst was the home of Women's Athletics there would be fundraiser parties etc. The open courtyards had the fountains turned on, evening parties had lights around, plenty of decor, very nice. Definitely historical.
I know one club vb player who struck it rich, perhaps Cal will chat with him about help.

There are so many Cal students who play club sports, every possible venue is used and highly booked at all venues/RSF/Haas/Hearst/campus needs more venues.
Chatter about redoing the building at Bancroft x Fulton SE corner for one.

As this issue has gone public this week, sounds like Cal is going to do what it can to round up the $$ from donors.
