Watching the Birmingham Bowl on now, he doesn't look that impressive. He's big, but throws aren't that accurate...

He didn't look that great on the designed run either and got a little shaken up. The Auburn QB is pretty bad. Watching Goff throw yesterday was a treat.

Not seeing it either. Although Auburn has Waaaaay better athletes than AF.

Not very accurate. Unimpressive so far. The color analyst is fairly critical of him

Goff's been unimpressive a couple quarters as well. Hard to judge a QB on such a small sample size, but last impressions can go a long way in the draft.

I would rather lynch be the first qb taken. More likely that the Browns will draft a qb first, and I'd do anything for goff to avoid that failure factory. Even the niners is a better destination

I haven't seen lynch enough to compare him to Goff. What I do see in Goff is an amazing pocket presence, great feet, head and shoulders always pointing up field and quick side steps to get into a throwing lane. He played most of his career under extreme pressure coming at him. He is great stepping up six inches to avoid the sack. To me these are qualities very few NFL qb's have, when you add in his arm, touch on passes and decision making I think he's going to be a great NFL quarterback.

Goff's mechanics are as good as any college QB I've ever seen.

This really sums it up. Goff may have the best footwork I have seen in a recent college QB not named Luck, and he is right there with Luck. If Goff plays behind Furd's oline, he wins the Heisman and no one is asking if he is the best QB.

Whenever I read anything about Lynch they comment on his tangibles first, which usually means the QB will be a bust.

Sounds perfect for the Browns or 49ers ... yeah, skinny Goff would be a great grab for a team down the drafting list as a project QB to understudy and replace an existing starter who has a few more years to play, learn the playbook, S&C ...
It's happened before.

Lynch's throwing motion looked a bit long to me, even as the announcers were saying how compact it was considering his long arms.

It's been a long time since Goff had a game as bad as the one Lynch just played. And even when Goff's played badly, it's been because of decision-making or ball security rather than the brutal display of inaccuracy that I just witnessed. Shades of Druckenmiller. If the Niners take Lynch over Goff, it will haunt them forever. Like Smith over Rodgers. Goddammit.

This may be an apt comparison. Leaf had the measureables and the big arm. Peyton was precise on his movements and accurate with the ball.

Paxton may be a good quarterback in the future, but his mechanics and accuracy are not comparable to Goffs in any way shape or form. If a team takes Paxton over Goff, they will regret it almost immediately.

It would be vintage 49ers for them to take Lynch over Goff. Trent Baalke doesn't have a clue.

Bruce Jenkins in the Chronicle today made the point that Goff could understudy under Gabbert for a year with the Niners. Hope SF gets him.

gocalbear, I was going to post the same thought. Reminds me of the 1998 draft. Indianapolis took Peyton. He turned out to have a slightly better career then the guy (Ryan Leaf) with all the measurables--size, speed, arm strength. You can't teach arm strength but you can't really teach accuracy either. Plus, after 3 years in the Pac 12 Goff has faced way better defenses then the QB from Memphis State. Paxton Lynch is a bit of a gamble--high upside but could flop.

Under Gabbert? No. Got to be kidding. There are about 10 to 12 quarterbacks in the NFL that would force Goff to the bench to get seasoning. Gabbert is not one of them.

Lynch is a guy that a team should spend a late 1st or maybe a 2nd round on and stash. He's got a lot of upside but no way no how will he be able to handle being thrown to the wolves year one. He's a less seasoned version of bortles in many ways.

Goff will survive if he's thrown to the wolves it's just that you hope he gets a better situation than say the 49ers. Problem is there's a reason why most those franchises are where they are in terms of draft order and QB needs

well, yeah ... but the 49ers could hire the qb guru who developed the Butte Boy ... he needs a job.

Agree. Goff has great intangibles: pocket presence, ability to scan the field, read through his progression and deliver the ball within a tight time and space window. Those are qualities that are hard to teach/learn.

The NFL tends to overestimate physical talents with QBs, size and running ability. Some of it is due to Newton's success. Lynch might well go ahead of Goff in the draft.

Agree. Goff is phenomenal in his accuracy under heavy pressure. Imagine what he could do if he had more than 2 or 3 seconds to throw.

He is able to do that because he reads the defense, signals to the receiver to improve getting open based on the coverage and knows where his receivers are going to be. Like Dykes says, it takes a lot of work to make things look easy.

Brett Favre was 35 when Green Bay drafted a 21-year-old Aaron Rodgers.

Tony Romo's age: 35*

Jared Goff's age: 21

(*Romo will be 36 by the next draft. But the point is there's a 14-year age difference between Favre and Rodgers and between Romo and Goff.)

Lynch is impressive. He is big, athletic and has a strong arm. I think he's physically better than Goff, but Goff is so mentally and physically tough.

The situation reminds me of the Rodgers-Smith saga. Smith was more physically talented, but Rodgers was tougher mentally and physically. Goff has been through 1-11 and played in a tough conference with less talented teammates.

It's not his arm or legs that will allow Goff to be successful. It's the giant blood-pumping organ housed inside his rib cage.

Every year there are one or two "sure things" at QB in the draft who end up as busts. If Lynch is rated ahead of Goff by the "experts," I'd put my trust with them rather than the wanna-be GMs on this board. That said, perhaps the Air Force game will propel Goff ahead of Lynch in the draft projections. I'm VERY happy for Goff that he went out with a bang. Yet at the same time, as a GM forced to invest millions of dollars in one player, I'd be closely analyzing why Goff self-destructed or simply played average--and didn't elevate his game and the team's overall play as a leader--in Cal's most important games this year, starting with the Utah game. Against Air Force, Goff showed a touch and accuracy on long throws which had been missing in many of this year's games.

I suspect Goff will do well in the NFL if he works hard, gets a fair shot somewhere, and isn't overwhelmed by the money. But, if so, he will join the confounding and rather long list of athletes who had their best days after leaving Cal, rather than at Cal.

I know some of you will strongly disagree with me, and that is fine. Some will just blame the offensive line. Some of you have called his Cal career "amazing"--I just don't agree with that. What is amazing about going 0-12? Give me a Mike Pawlawski any day of the week over a player like Goff.
