Sonny said that Rubenzer requested a move back to QB and took reps there during bowl prep. He'll be in the mix at QB in the spring.

At this point, he's the most experienced QB on our roster, by far. Even if he doesn't end up getting the starting job, we should use him in certain situations like we did two years ago.

Forrest vs Bowers vs Rubenzer vs Gilliam ... we're in much better shape than at the end of 2012.
All have been and will be throwing ... Goff gave them the secret: work their butts off getting better.

Rube winning the starting job and doing well would be a great story. And I honestly believe if there is one kid that could rally all the troops it would be a kid who wanted to play football so bad he moved over to the defensive line.

Go RUBE!!!

Excellent. He was a serviceable safety, but he could potentially be a dynamic mobile QB.

A reminder about Rubenzer the QB:

Senior Yr Stats from HS: 4201 pass yards, 73.7% comp pct, 61 TDs to 3 INTs, 1235 rush yards, 10 rush TDs, 8.0 ypc.

I can take out all of my giant man-sized posters of Rube and hang them back up around my house.

Except that he can't pass.... there's always that to consider.
( I will say, however, awesome looking highlight clips above - dude can SCAMPER!)

Maybe his mechanics have improved...I know he is in way better shape then begining of last year so we shall see in spring

More power to him, but he was already moved off the position. Granted it was due to the depth in the secondary, but it would seem their expectations of him at QB changed some point prior to that.

Its an uphill road, but he has the talent and work ethic to pull it off. Good Luck, Rube!!

He wasn't off the depth chart or moved off the position. He played well in the bowl game and had an int.

He took reps at qb in bowl prep to prepare in advance for the move back to qb.

You don't lead a state champion vs good comp with otherworldly passing numbers if you can't pass.

I wouldn't base expectations on occasional throws to keep the defense honest as a true frosh. He'll definitely be in the mix. They won't pick a guy to start who can't pass at the P5 level.

Excited to see what he can do! I expect that the game will have slowed down a bunch for him at this point as he's been a regular on defense.

Exciting play maker and true golden bear!

Who does this leave coming back at Safety?

With Experience: Drew, Piatt (is he healthy and returning?), Vanderbilt, Brown (hardly played)

Blueshirts: McCrary,

Nickel: Turner, Rambo, Coleman (was he injured, hardly played late in the year?)

I would expect some of the nickel backs to move to Safety.

Didn't Walker play a lot at nickel? He returns, right?
MoragaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Drew
Piatt
Turner
Rambo
Vanderbilt
Brown
Tartabull
Greathouse
McCrary
Drayden (incoming frosh)

Coleman and Walker are nickels. I'd be surprised if Turner and Vanderbilt stay there unless the depth is so strong that it's the best way they see the field as sophs.

Safety should not be a concern.

That looks pretty solid. Is Tartabull gone? Seems like we have more talent and depth at DB than we've had in a long time. Would you agree?
MoragaBear

I had Tartabull on my list but just forgot to add him. Unless something changes, he'll be back and hopefully finally healthy. I really like that group.

Haven't heard anything about coaching situations yet though I'd be surprised if there weren't any shifting and changes.

Interesting development. Watching Baker Mayfield now, it doesn't take great arm strength to run the uptempo spread offense. Just need to be accurate, get rid of the ball quick, and as a bonus, have some mobility.

This site has him listed as the #2 SS and not on the 5-deep at QB. That seems an awful like being off the depth chart at QB. I get the reasoning and the need at SS, but why would move him if you thought he had a chance to be the starting QB in one years time? That just doesnt make sense to me. Im not saying he isnt capable, only saying that if the staff thought he was they should have kept at QB and let him have some practice reps over the last 6 months, not just the last couple of weeks.

I, for one, and definitely not saying this. But if he could pass and has potential, why would you move him out for almost an entire years worth of backup reps?

MoragaBear;842624942 said:

Well of course they are going to pick who they think can be the best. That would include being able to pass at this level. No doubts here.

Feels like Fools Gold to me. I wouldnt (as Sonny) deny him the opportunity to move back, but I am skeptical that the staff has already seen something and made the move this past year based upon that. I dont think they have seen anything new. They like Rube. He is a team player and deserves the shot at getting back in the mix. Nothing wrong with that. I am just not expecting much from it.

Here's to being pleasantly surprised.

Luke's a competitor. You can't teach having a fire in the belly and doing whatever it takes to be on the field. He reminds me a bit of Mike Pawlawski.

Luke reminds me of Mickey Mo ... considering that he only had his HS experience, he did a helluva job.
As you said: "fire in the belly and doing whatever it takes to be on the field" ... good job, Luke.

Can we get Utah State's DC. I don't know who he is, but watching the defenses of Wisconsin's Aranda and Houston's Todd Orlando in the bowl games has been impressive
