LINK: The NFL seeks volunteers for Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara

Quote:

The NFL is looking for 500 volunteers to help with Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadiumbut don't expect the commitment to score you a free ticket to the game.

Rather, if you sign up, you should plan to lift a lot of weight and give a lot of timeat least 33.5 hours.

The gig involves helping assemble the stage where Cold Play will perform its half-time show on game day, Feb 7. To be considered, applicants must meet several requirements, including being at least 18 years old, able to pass a background check and lift 50 pounds. They also must attend nine rehearsals, most taking place in the evening and lasting up to four hours. The time commitment on the day of the game has't been released.

The NFL has long called on volunteers to help with Super Bowl games. While some feel the tradition builds community spirit around the event and gives fans the opportunity to get involved, others think the well-funded football league has a lot of audacity asking people to work for free.

In an NPR commentary about volunteers at last year's Super Bowl, sports writer Frank Deford said, "Of course, I want you to keep in mind that the NFL is officially a nonprofit, even though commissioner Roger Goodell makes in excess of $40 million a year...Of all the great, needy charities in the world, desperate for volunteers, who, in their right mind, would pick the Super Bowl?"

Many, if not most, have probably suffered from repeated concussions.
Do they get fast food snacks and drinks to avoid hunger and dehydration?
A lot of hours and hard work to ensure that the for-profit game helps the bottom line of the non-profit NFL.

Agree with the comments from Frank Deford: "Of course, I want you to keep in mind that the NFL is officially a nonprofit, even though commissioner Roger Goodell makes in excess of $40 million a year...Of all the great, needy charities in the world, desperate for volunteers, who, in their right mind, would pick the Super Bowl?"

If you want to want to lift a lot of weight and give a lot of unpaid time to help "the community", your time might be better spent working for Habitat for Humanity building homes for the poor in the Bay Area instead of working to line the pockets of the wealthy NFL and indirectly helping the organizations that have already abandoned San Francisco (49ers) and plan to abandon Oakland (Raiders).
But that is just my own point of view.

But wait, there's more... LINK: S.F. fire chief takes heat for nixing Super Bowl badges

Quote:

There’s a shiny Super Bowl 50 commemorative badge being worn by a number of Bay Area public safety agencies leading up to next month’s big game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara — but there is a notable exception.

San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said “no” to her rank-and-file firefighters buying the NFL-sanctioned badges (at $124.99 a pop) — and not just because she thinks the commercial venture trivializes the department’s “rich 150-year history.”

[...]

More than 20 public safety agencies are allowing their officers and firefighters to buy the NFL-licensed badges, which look like the department badges with a Super Bowl 50 logo. They include the California Highway Patrol, which is letting 1,800 officers wear them while on duty.

In other words, the CHP or tax payer is paying out $220k for NFL-licensed badges... If the CHP or local police want the badges, that's fine but public shouldn't be paying for it.

My point of view is billionaires who shake down cities don't need free labor. It's beyond ridiculous.

City officials allegedly withheld Super Bowl plans from the youth sports league until Dec. 15, according to Comcast SportsNet, and agreed to close the soccer fields without holding a legally mandated public hearing. Soccer advocates claim the city also flouted its own permit rules, which reserve the fields for youth soccer organizations.

Play60!

The public VTA parking lot I use for my daily commute to work (so I can pay my taxes for things like commuter parking) is closed from now until a week after the super bowl. I'm not sure I can stomach watching the SB this year...

Volunteers get a free apron and a hat for their efforts to restrain assailants and drunken brawlers in the Mens restroom.

My guess is that the people who want to do it will do it and those who think it is stupid will not do it. So...who really cares?

As for the issue with the field, etc....Santa Clara knew all about all of that when the begged so hard to get the stadium built there. Now people are pissed it is there. Too bad.

Hey, I can always get one of these. SB50 is so commuter friendly!

Yes, but the kids and coaches who scheduled their soccer games didn't. and the NFL kept their plans and demands secret until the last minute citing security (theater).

When I was a kid my dad was friends with a man who was a CPA for the Raiders. After Super Bowl II I asked my dad if his friend could get me a Raiders jersey. My dad's friend told him those jerseys were reserved for players only (my how things have changed). He got me a football autographed by the team after the game instead. I have kept it all these years:

It's a SB50 branded clipper card, not an actual sb50 football. I was posting to comment on the irony since many bay area public transportation options are being screwed over by SB50.

Great post. Habitat is just one for starters to be sure.
For the NFL to pay even minimum wage for help would be such a drop in the bucket for them.

Things I'd love to see (but won't happen):

Folks who don't like the NFL shaking everyone down taking all the volunteer slots and then engaging in a work slowdown so the halftime show never happens...

You'd better give us free labor, or else we're gonna threaten you by applying to relocate to LA.
