Also..he is a cool prospect and all, but not sure what he does better than Luke? a little bigger build?

I agree about the "early" part. Luke, is a legit 6 even...Chase can't be more than 2 inches taller. I got to see them next to each other at a post game event last year.

A physical alpha dog like Vic is usually able to win over teammates. He'll probably be a good leader and bring great intangibles to the table. Does he have the arm talent and accuracy to win the job? Probably not after 1 fall camp.
Forrest's slow delivery concerns me, and he seems to have the least upside. Luke's size and arm strength concern me. I'm rooting for Gilliam because he seems to be the most complete guy we have in terms of arm, size, and running ability. Ross is #2 in my book in terms of well roundedness.
Honestly, I have no clue. I'd be happy with whoever, and I think we have enough talent there that we should be okay on offense. I'm rooting for Gilliam/Ross to be the 1 and 2 to start the season and for Vic to be waiting in the wings in case they falter.

He's as fast as Luke and outweighs him by 70 lbs. Either one is fine but Vic is a load that's going to be hard to bring down. A lot of options!

Vic weighs 265? Wow.

he's close to 240...def not 265.

My order of likelihood:
Forrest
Bowers
Gilliam
Tie: Rubenzer in September / Vicious Vic in November

Based on hair and looking like someone famous? If Zach Kline walks on, he should be the favorite - great hair and he really looks like Tom Cruise and has his swagger.

The funny thing about this thread is that the thread was designed to excite us about the QB battle.
But everyone chimes in with problems with this QB or that QB and now I'm depressed.
I mean I'm depressed about the whole Luke thing because I think he ends up without a position, and if he wins the QB job, that is probably a default win not a knock it out of the park win. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm depressed about what folks say about Forrest. What I saw was different. And I watched a few practices. I don't think his arm or release are a problem any more than anybody else that isn't Goff. And he makes good decision and good progressions. I don't think he will go downfield as deeply or frequently as Goff but I think he can throw for 300 yards on occasion.
I'm depressed about Viramontes "transferring" if he loses the job. Geez, he is true frosh. He needs to develop as a passer. Rub was a better passer coming out of HS and he still needs to develop. He could be a good special teams contributor and even return punts in the meantime. I like the guys quickness and footwork both in and out of the pocket. He's kind of like Vernon Adams in his scramble style.
I'm depressed about how many short QBs we have. I guess Gilliam is really the only guy with height. Regardless of the system and the degree of running we do at QB, we need a QB with the height to make good reads.
But mostly I'm depressed that none of them are Goff.
I guess I won't worry and I'll be happy.

Why worry about height? It's rarely a difference maker in college. Some of the best QBs in in the Pac in recent memory have been 6'1" or shorter. That's the least of my worries about the QB position.

We go into Spring Ball next month with 4 contenders for the coveted job of quarterback in a Bear Raid offense (plus one arriving in fall).
Lead Candidate - Chase Forrest actually has some reps in game time and he looked decent. He also has great hair. Reminds me of a young Morrissey.
Underdog - Can Ross Bowers come from the scout team to take the job? He also has really good hair. Reminds me of a young Tom Cruise.
Prodigal Son - Can Luke Rubenzer return from the safety position to win the job many thought he owned a year ago at this time? His hair is fine. Dead ringer for Johnny Manziel.
Dark Horse - Max Gilliam - Is enrolled and will be competing this spring. Will be tough for him to come in and win but you never know. His hair is also fine. Like a young Heath Ledger.
Longshot - Vicous Vic Viramontes will be arriving in the fall so it would be a big shock for him to win. His hair says Uncle Rico but the rest of him says the Rock. Can't wait to see what this kid can do on the field.

I think it was clear that Luke was asked to redshirt to play QB last year, as he was behind Chase. He said no, he wanted to play anywhere, so they put him at Safety. But he was behind Chase coming out of spring.
I can see them using him again like they used him last year - coming off the bench to provide a spark running or passing. I am sure they will provide some plays specifically for him. But I would think the current QB battle is between Chase, Bowers and Gilliam.
It will be interesting to see what happens. I think any of these guys could be very good. One thing that Dykes has been able to do over the course of time is to develop QBs.

VicV is interesting ... wonder if we'll see him in as RB, and the return of dual-threat, run or pass which we haven't seen for quite a while. Great size and throws well which will be improved with coaching. Joe Kapp toughness.

OMG you nailed it - Vicious Vic is a dead ringer for Joe Kapp. Can somebody more skilled than me put up some pics of the two (after Vic's haircut).
Start him. Raw, unskilled or whatever - put him in
