Depending upon which way the QB is pivoting to do the potential hand off, one elbow will be cocked close to his body (between RB and QB), and the other will be basically pointed towards the defense (assuming QB does a typical gun handoff stance). If QB pulls the ball, that elbow pointed at the D will be the first to move to get set into a throwing motion. So if you are keying on the elbow (and not the ball), and you see that elbow beginning to pull out in a throwing motion, then you can trigger the route. That's the theory as best as I can interpret it from that tweet.

My issue is that the QB should be executing a fake throw if they hand the ball off (which Goff always did), so that movement of pulling the ball out and getting in a throwing position will be the same regardless of whether the ball is with RB or QB. Thus, triggering on the elbow only and to the exclusion of the ball is a recipe for getting burned.

That's my WAG at least.

I think the "handedness" of the QB also comes into play. If the QB's throwing arm is not the one facing the D you're not going to see the movement when he keeps.

Also, if the defense is forcing the decision, then you don't really have to look at the QB's arm - it's assignment driven. In other words, if the unblocked DE always goes for the RB you can be pretty sure the QB is keeping.
