In another CFB forum I mentioned that I took bowling at Cal, at the on-campus bowling alley. A (much younger) Old Blue responded with amazement.

Anybody else here remember the bowling alley under the student union? Now a bookstore, I believe....anybody recall what year the transition took place?

I have many fond memories of hours wasted, playing pinball down there. (Between the bowling alley and the Evans Hall computer lab, it seems I spent most of my college years underground.)

I remember it well. There were pillars between two sets of lanes. Bowled in Monday night league there for three years. It was a nice place to go to relax and enjoy.

I tried to fit in a PE class most quarters. Took bowling, fencing, trampoline, and several quarters of squash.

Played my first two video games there: Pong and Tank. Also, lots of bowling there through the years...

Of course I remember bowling at the ASUC. They didn't put red and green bears on the windows facing Sproul Plaza back then. What an insult to all who love Cal.

Yep - worked there and bowled on the team (yes, Cal had an intercollegiate bowling team).
Many, many hours of working, practicing, and also spent my share of time playing asteroids as well (used to hear the audio from that game in my sleep).

Don't recall when they starting taking the lanes out, but recall that they removed half of the lanes and replaced them with pool tables initially, then later removed the remaining 8 lanes and finally converted the whole thing to a book store.

I have made a few attempts to find out where the bowling team trophies that we had on display went to - including the National Championship that we won when I was there, but have never been able to locate them. Hate to think that they were tossed out in the dumpster during the remodeling, but ...

Cal also had a bowling team....I was friend's with a Cal bowler on the team who took the sport very seriously and spent most of his time bowling...I always thought it funny that someone would come to Cal to bowl.

Well, I can say that I didn't go to Cal to bowl, but I did bowl during my time at Cal.

Unfortunately, the bowling commitments meant that attending football games were pretty much out of the question - tournaments were held at different schools about every 2-3 weeks from September through around February or March. Although I followed football during my time at Cal, I didn't become a real Cal football backer and aficionado until after graduation - which is a bit sad in that there were some great teams while I was there.

Ha. Honestly, I didn't even know it was gone. Last time I saw it was probably in the early 90s.

Didn't they turn it into the Bearcade or something, or was it next to it?

Hahaha, I know one of the NC champs, met after getting out of Cal. (Is that you Tommy?) Didn't even know there was a bowling team, let alone a NC. Never got into bowling but played foosball at ASUC.

It was there when I started at Cal Fall 1963 (along with the barbershop.

I remember taking a bowling class back in the mid 1970s. I also remember taking a golf class on the baseball field next to Edwards Field. We'd get out in the deepest part of right field with a bag containing about 50 golf balls and a few irons and hit practice shots towards the backstop at home place (and sometimes over it accidentally on purpose). We had some feedback from the instructor on how we could improve our swings as I recall. Then we'd spend the last 10 minutes or so picking up the golf balls scattered all over the infield.

I took a golf class as UC Davis in the 70s. The coach was the towel-biting basketball coach, Coach Hamilton. He was hilarious. He said close doesn't count except for horse shoes, hand grenades and making love. He also said that everybody cheats at golf--even your priest. I broke a driver in half--a true "wood"--with a piece cartwheeling into the air. He came over and told me he liked my driving power, but to try to take a little off it next time. I can't believe I got a half unit for all that. But then I also got two units for a tractor driving class. Davis had its advantages.

I worked in the Underground during the early nineties. At that time, one half of the bowling lanes had been removed and replaced with pool tables as you recall. I believe that happened late eighties. I'm not exactly sure when they removed the rest of the lanes but I believe it was mid- to late-nineties when they moved some of the arcade machines upstairs and put the bookstore downstairs.

Working there, I did get to try and fix issues with the lanes (usually stuck pins or bowling balls) and those machines were ancient. Also, every Sunday, the lanes were waxed with this machine that we had to pull halfway down and then it would drive itself to the front. I usually brought a change of shoes and socks because the wax (or oil?) would seep into my shoes.

There were some incidents that occurred during the time that I worked there that lead to the Underground being closed to the public which put a serious dent into the money that was being made. Friday and Saturday nights became like a dead zone.

A little while after I graduated, I heard about an armed robbery that occurred after hours. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the final nail in the coffin for the Underground being open late.

If I remember correctly there was also several billiard (pool) tables also. Of course my memory may be gone by now. I was there from 1965-1969, I think. Lots of marijuana around.

Nope - I'm not Tommy. He bowled in the 4th on the team, I bowled anchor. Say hi to him for me next time you see him.

On a semi-football or sports related note, thinking back - as a team, we would not have had an issue with the academic requirements that are in place for football now. Of our five team members, we had one Civil Engineering major, two Electrical Engineering majors, and two Computer Science majors. I haven't seen Tommy in 15 years or more but if I run into him... Didn't know him at Cal. He was in the film business for a while, where I met him. Mutual friend said he's in IT now. Any way, good for you guys for winning it all.

An old buddy of mine, Eric L, was on the team when they won the natty. Sounds weird, doesn't it? I wanna say 1978? Eric was (is) a great guy... haven't seen him in years, unfortunately.

Absolutely remember it!

Never bowled there myself but had many friends who did, and remember hearing about the team and how well they were doing. I guess it sounds strange now to talk about getting PE credit for bowling but that wasn't so uncommon back in the day. I took bowling in high school in the mid 70s and got PE credit... they even bussed us to the bowling alley twice a week!

Yep, I took bowling PE in the early 80s at the ASUC lanes. My first ATM card was for the Hibernia branch at the bottom of the steps leading up to Ludwig's Fountain. 2 free ATM transactions per month, and then you had to use the teller window or pay a per-use fee.

Yes. My wife only came close to breaking 200 once in her life when she rolled a 209 at ASUC. Exactly a year later, I had my lifetime best of 203 at ASUC, but in spite of the friendly lanes, I couldn't match her best score.

I definitely got better scores at ASUC than Albany Bowl, but Albany Bowl had the advantage of being away from campus where people would feel more free to talk about top secret information regarding Cal athletics. :p

I sure do remember the bowling alley. I was in school from '71 to '73 and lived by campus for another 4 years after graduating and starting work. I didn't bowl there a lot but it was always there if I wanted to.
