I did a write-up awhile back about Stanford's Oline and defensive front 7 being miserable failures at the NFL level, for the most part. I was under the impression that Stanford tight ends were faring well in the NFL. But now I come across this article where Coby Fleener (Stanford tight end and same graduating class as Jonathan Martin) has to defend himself against the "soft" label. I don't know anything about him being soft or not being soft, but the article is below. One more piece of the strange Stanford puzzle.

Most of Furd is soft and that's coming from Furders themselves. I think softness is part of Furd's core culture, football or otherwise.

He was used as a tall WR in college (runs a 4.5 40), despite the title TE, he often was out on splits. He is light to be a NFL TE, at only 255 lbs. Gets pushed around.

255 is not light, especially for a guy they split out. Gronkowski is about 265 and he's not normal. The only thing truly soft about Fleener are his hands. It's a little silly to put him down because of where he went to school. He's better than anybody I can remember Cal has had since one Tony Gonzales.

Bottom line- I don't like Stanford but it's just silly to belittle a really good player.

Apparently not too soft to get a $36M deal. Kinda buried the lead there dajo.

In my mind there is no question that Tony Gonzales is one of the best, if not the best ever, tight end in NFL history. He deserves every accolade and dollar he ever earned. I will not stoop to denigrate him because he is a Cal Bear. He is a champion and a role model.

I appreciate good talent and good role models regardless of where they went to college.

You apparently appreciate and take the annual Big Game Ass Kicking of the last few years personally.

Coaching hasn't changed, Stanford's recruiting is much better than Cal's, and apparently Stanford's nutrition, diet and strength training is better. Get used to it.

None -we made the mistake of hiring and sticking with the wrong coach. Seems to be a common problem with our athletic programs. Dawkins, Braun, Holmoe, Teevans, fill in the blank. Every once in a while we (and you) hire the right guy. And then he leaves. I think Shaw is around for awhile. I hope Dawkins is not.

Same here.

I wouldn't refer to Fleener as being soft - he's very skilled and is a good athlete. He's a terrible blocker though (the reverse Craig Stevens). The Colts made a wise decision letting Fleener walk.

Pretty damning to say a TE is a terrible blocker since that's a big part of the TE job.

Inside word among a lot of nfl players this common accepted knowledge... They accept them as teammates but most are not respected whole heartedly...
