+1 ... yes, startling ... big Grin
why four LB positions if we'll be in a 4-2-5?

i really hope Devante Downs takes over for Hardy soon.
Ashtyn Davis behind Allensworth? not sure who that is and how good he'll be.
glad Ooms is listed ahead of Granado, as center play wasn't great last season. i think the interior 3 spots will be good and competitive. OT...not so confident.
still think Looney is underweight for his frame, but...more concerned with the overall DT depth.
dang, vic 235??? he may be overweight LOL. would like to see Mccrary jump some ppl by mid-season.

Ashtyn Davis runs for the Cal track team in the high hurdles. He won the CCS HH his senior year out of Santa Cruz HS & placed at the state meet. He's a physical specimen. He's a walk-on in football.

Agreed, if he's healthy and making plays, he will be on the field plenty.
Regarding the rest of the defense: A lot of people are predicting we will be improved on D, but the names on that depth chart have a lot to prove. Hope they do. Who on that D list looks like they could end up as First Team All Pac 12? Maybe only Drew, IMO, and now he might be injured.

many times the spurs (the OLB/Safety hybrids) are considered linebackers. Btw I always called them spurs..but every team that runs that kind of defense (3-3-5 and 4-2-5) has their own name.
Big C_Cal;842674452 said:
Yeah, that is one BIG offensive line. IIRC, with the listed starters, that would be our biggest OL ever. Nothing even close.

Didn't see Viramontes. Does that mean he's redshirting?
Or did I miss it?
Or does it mean nothing?

I don't think I've ever said that.

It looks like Spavital's flipped body types at the H and Y positions. Has anyone noticed what side guys like Hudson, Veasy, and Austin are lining up on? Are those guys the inside receivers in trips? I assume they're still the ones playing TE when we go to that.

Hudson is the only true line up everywhere TE/WR/FB you can add wells and Mc Morris and JD Hinnant accordingly

Good stuff. If you get a chance to watch for it, I'd be curious to hear how they're lining up from outside to inside. Normally you number receivers from outside to inside. So, in our standard 2x2 formations last year, Davis (X) would've been the #1 receiver on the left side, Treggs (H) would've been the #2 receiver on the left side, Anderson (Y) would've been #2 on the right, and Lawler (Z) would've been #1 on the right. On that same model, in a 3x1 formation, the outside-most receiver in trips is #1, the guy in the middle is #2, and the guy on the inside is #3.
Under TF, X and Z were always #1 on their side, and H was always #2. When we were 3x1, Y was always #3 (with one particular formation that was an exception). It looks like Spavital's flipped the body types of H and Y, and if he's actually having guys like Stovall line up as #3 in trips, it'd say some really interesting things about where the offense is going. If we used those guys at #3, it'd be a lot more like what WVU did with Tavon Austin at Y, whereas what we were doing with TF is more like what Texas Tech did with Jace Amaro at Y a few years ago.
