over fifty plus (50+) years ... hmmmm
Slightly (very) wonder how other schools are on QB and other positions, especially stats on the length in NFL since this is about drafting into NFL.

Some fun football under those guys.
Morton and Co were great considering the difficult times.

Find it hard to believe but that's pretty cool. Should have been 7 with Kapp right?

Yep. Did that without a first-round QB.

I'd add Bernie kosar to the Miami first rounders. It was supplemental but still in 1st.

Have we even been to another bowl 3 times or more Pretty slim pickings when it comes to Cal bowl history...

Edit: only counting bowl games post 1958

Joe Roth would have made it 7 Cal QBs in the 1st round.

Indeed.

Also, I believe Cal leads all universities with number of alumni to start as QB in the Super Bowl:

  • Kapp - led Minnesota to its first SB,
  • Morton - led Dallas and Denver to their first SBs (also the first QB to be a starter for teams in both conferences),
  • Ferragamo - led the Rams to their first (and only) SB,
  • Rodgers - SB MVP.

And as others have noted, Gale Gilbert was on the roster in five consecutive Super Bowls (and I believe he got brief playing time for the Chargers in his fifth).

I would not have guessed this factoid and would have guessed Miami. The big 3 schools in Florida have won 6 Heisman trophies since 1992 but they all turned out to be busts ( too early for Jameis Winston).

Was Rich Campbell (No. 6) really that good? Why'd he fail so badly in the NFL.

I only know of him because of 1) the Packers angle and 2) he became a newspaper columnist in Hattiesberg, Mississippi and wrote about Rodgers coming to town in 2004.

I guess somebody needs to tell Kurt Warner to stop claiming to be a Super Bowl winning QB.

Yes, Rich Campbell was that good. I remember him playing at Cal and he was an excellent QB (in all games except the one home game against UCLA that he and two other Cal QBs combined to throw 5 INTs).

I think Rich Canpbell was a four year starter at Cal. He also was something like 6'-5" which was a huge size for a QB in early 80's.

Go Bears!

He was really good and I was a little surprised he didn't fare too well as a pro. As I recollect, he had a strong arm and also had great touch and accuracy. He was tall, too (6-4 or 6-5). As a senior (and even earlier), he suffered from us not having a consistent deep threat to stretch the defense. His top target was Matt Bouza, a possession receiver, and I was amazed at some of the first downs they would hook up for: It'd be like 3rd and 8 and the entire defense would know who we were going to, but we'd get 9 yds with a perfectly thrown ball and a great catch.

I'm thinking Rich Campbell's main physical drawback might have been a lack of overall athleticism. He was kind of a statue back there, but this was back when the NFL wanted tall guys with good arms. Maybe he didn't have a super-quick release, too? I can't remember, but I know he could heave it. I saw him throw a TD in Tucson where the ball must've traveled 60 yds in the air.

He might have also suffered from a lack of "fire in the belly". Not to say he was unmotivated, i.e. not willing to put in the work, but I know one of the priorities in his life when he was in his 20s was his ministry. He might possibly have just not been 100% devoted to the NFL grind.

Super nice guy and one of our best QBs ever.

Those were the years when we REALLY suffered in the recruiting department. Our facilities sucked, we were still getting over "the sixties" in the eyes of most recruits' families and the HC at that time, Roger Theder, was a great football guy (and a really nice guy, personally), but not a dynamic recruiter. We would typically have little overall talent/speed and even less depth.

Had no idea Craig Morton and Elway, who succeeded him with he retired, wore the same number for the Broncos.

I meant to say L.A. Rams but that seemed to be redundant. (Kurt Warner played for some team in St. Louis but I can't remember the team name.)

Seriously, I remember when they won the Super Bowl and the owner Georgia Frontiere claimed that the win "proved" they made the right decision in moving to St. Louis. I guess the city and/or stadium was greater factor than the coaches and players.

Really was a good guy. Met him once and we talked for 15-20 mins. After that he would go out of his way to catch up whenever we ran into each other on campus.

Wentz reminds me of a cross between Campbell and Boller. Physically an NFL prototype and a cannon, but doesn't have the nimbleness, touch, vision, and decision making of Montana, Brady, AR, and Goff.

What makes this list even more remarkable is that most of these guys, especially Morton, played with some pretty marginal teams.

And let's not forget that Joe Roth would have very likely been on that list if he had not succumbed to cancer.

Just giving you a hard time. I hated the Rams and felt the move to STL ruined the rivalry with the 9ers. It will be interesting to see how things develop with the Rams back in LA where they belong.
