Some secondary thoughts on webb commitment

For some time I've been thinking whether there might be additional considerations if Webb were to transfer to Cal.

1. The possibility of some of our current QB's considering their own transfer which I've commented on in another thread.
2. The possibility of additional fall-out at CU of players that Webb had urged to go there to play. Do they remain committed?
3. The possibility of Rs 2 of our Fr QB's and the effect that might have on 2017 QB consideration and commitment ... OR
4. The possibility of Vic wanting to play right away and asking to move to defense (there was no downside to this that I could see) but still has an impact on 3.

All in the light of ....
Graduate, University of California, Berkeley ...
the point of Cal football now, again ... guys getting Berkeley education.
It's why Kline found his way back, and Luke will do whatever ... the degree.

Webb is a Graduate transfer so he won't be getting a Cal degree unless he finishes his chosen Masters program.

As long as the current roster QBs are given a fair shot to compete for the starting job this year I don't think there is much risk of any of them transferring specifically because of Webb's arrival. However, if Webb is essentially given the starting job and Cal goes out next year and tries to bring in another transfer QB as the starter (e. g., the situation at Oregon) I believe it indeed could affect roster QB transfers and future QB recruiting.

This really increases our chances of landing a top qb recruit this year

It might, but it takes a tremendously confident young man to look at a Jr., So, and 2 Fr (all Rs') sitting in the wings and saying "I like my chances". I know the chance to get a Cal degree should be a key element in making a decision but the QB's we will want are ALL highly successful and want that opportunity to start. Heck, what if Spav is able to convince Martell to come to Cal? That brings another whole set of dynamics into play. Is it likely, probably not, but regardless the 2017 QB will be the first to be "Spav's" choice for his system.

Don't you feel better about the current Freshman then? Instead of being thrown in the deep end, they get a year to improve under our system and don't have to worry about Goff's shadow.

Top kids don't care about the ones already there. They think so much of themselves that they are confident in their ability to beat them out.

What concerns me about Webb is the INTs. If that pattern continues, the others will be in the thick of it.

I do think Rs by Freshmen can only be positive. Gilliam will wait but not sure about Vic as I said above.

All this is well and good, but rather than the individuals, as they come and go, I think of it as for the good of Cal FB. The one link of the offensive chain that was potentially weak going in this year was QB (not known, lack of experience). So now we have someone who seems dramatically better such that we are all anointing him the starter's role. If he is not better, then the group beneath him must be better than we gave credit. If he is, it gives "the experience" level of those below a chance to grow. Also, if Webb is injured, we are right where we were last week with no Webb. So for Cal I look at this as a win/win.

Receiving corps close to last year for different reasons (YAC, etc.), OLine better due to experience, RB much better, and now QB only a bit behind. All is positive.

Who bleeping gives a sh!$ if a QB transfers? Bring in the best talent you can and let the chips fall where they will. This isn't an everyone gets a participation trophy youth league.

Isn't Vic a QB/LB? He can play LB.

VicV is a QB ... until he isn't.

2: Who cares?

1, 3 and 4: A lot of possibilities there, but in college football, especially in our situation as an "emerging program" (hopefully, anyway), we need to do everything we can to win as many games as we can THIS SEASON. That trumps all other football decisions. Let those other chips fall where they may.

2: Nobody on here should care, but I bet McIntyre cares a lot. It feels like he's at the tipping point, may not be around much longer and 2017 committed recruits backing out accelerates that process.

Totally agree that this season is another key milestone that needs to be positive.

If we want to double down on Grad transfers, south carolinas former starting QB is transferring with 2 years to play. Now that would cause an exodus by a couple of our younger guys :P

Lol. I know you are joking but that kid has like 20 maybe 30 pass attempts under his belt. Def not a "proven starter" by any means. For those who were interested

Hard to see how that's the case. Webb's been recruited pretty publicly for months.

One of the big pluses of our coaches is that they're honest and make it clear that competition determines reps and playing time.
Nobody is guaranteed anything except what they earn.
Chase and Ross will be better for the new competition.
Webb will have to earn his position and it's on him to do so.

the fire under the roster QB's just got hotter thus we will see who really wants the job

Webb has one year--anyone who transfers would have to sit a year anyway. Our QB will be Webb or hopefully someone even better! Everyone else can take a redshirt year if they haven't already.

I love the idea that a year-and-done elite transfer qb looks at Cal as the best option to get himself into the NFL. That has to be a great thing for the program. QB-U!!

If Webb gets the starting gig, doesn't that mean Vic isn't the best choice anyway? If he's 2nd on the depth chart, then he just has to wait a year, but if he's anything else why would we be concerned about him leaving?

Entering 2016, sophomore years, and the Spring training, I think Chase and Ross felt it was competition between these 2 as to who would win the starting QB job. Zack, Max and Vic were the 'popular' dark-horses, but, Chase and Ross appeared to be the ones.

I think Sonny's and Spivital's recruitment of Webb and his commitment caught Chase and Ross unexpectedly and caught them by surprise.
They didn't expect this during spring training. They didn't see it coming. Blindsided

Moraga's post seems to indicate Chase and Ross knew this during spring training, so, maybe it was expected.

Sidebar - some posts indicate that Webb's entrance will heat up the competition. Webb is the guy and the competition will be for backup.
